🔨 The Different Stages of a Ceiling Repair!

At Bourne To Plaster, we believe a quality repair starts with the right preparation. Here's a step-by-step look at how we professionally repair a damaged plasterboard ceiling.

1️⃣ Removal & Preparation
Carefully cut away the damaged plasterboard, squaring off the affected areas to create clean, straight edges. Any remaining nails or fixings are removed from the exposed ceiling joists.

2️⃣ Additional Timber Supports
Where required, new timber supports are installed to provide a solid fixing point and ensure the replacement plasterboard is properly secured.

3️⃣ New Plasterboard Installation
New plasterboard is cut to size and securely fixed into position. All joints are reinforced with scrim tape to help minimise the risk of cracking.

4️⃣ Plastering & Finishing
The repaired areas are professionally skimmed to a smooth finish, carefully feathering the new plaster into the existing ceiling for a seamless transition, ready for decorating once fully dry.

✅ Proper preparation. Solid repairs. Quality finishes.

Another old Artex ceiling brought back to life in High Wycombe 👌

We removed the existing coving, reboarded the ceiling to give it a fresh, solid surface, then skimmed the whole area to a smooth finish ready for painting.

A much cleaner, more modern finish and a big improvement from the original textured ceiling.

Heavy Artex ➡️ Smooth, fresh ceilings 👌

Another job completed in High Wycombe — 7 heavily Artexed ceilings, all overboarded and skimmed.

The customer had the choice of either overskimming the existing Artex or overboarding and skimming. They chose the safest option and went for overboarding, giving us a brand-new solid surface and the best chance of a long-lasting finish.

✅ 7 ceilings overboarded
✅ Scrim taped throughout
✅ Two coats of Multi-Finish
✅ Smooth finish ready for decorating

A massive improvement throughout the property — no more heavy Artex!

Another stage of this double-storey extension completed ✅

This visit included plastering to the bedroom, bathroom and utility room, along with various areas of making good throughout the property.

Plenty of preparation involved, but everything is now left with a clean, smooth finish ready for decorating.

We’ll be back soon to tackle the bottom half of the extension and get the next stage completed. 👌

Another job completed today in Marlow Bottom 👌

The walls needed a fair bit of preparation before plastering, so all cracks were properly raked out, filled with flexible filler and reinforced with scrim tape. The existing surfaces were then stabilised to ensure a sound background before everything was finished with a fresh skim coat.

All left smooth and ready for decorating once fully dry.

Lath & plaster ceiling removal – the reality behind the job! 👷‍♂️

This video gives a good idea of just how much mess and debris is involved when removing an old lath and plaster ceiling.

Unlike modern plasterboard, these ceilings can be extremely thick and heavy, with decades of dust sitting above them. Once removal starts, there’s simply no way of making it a completely clean process — which is why thorough protection and preparation beforehand is so important.

We protect the working area as much as possible, remove all the old plaster and timber laths, de-nail the joists, clear the debris and then get everything ready for the new ceiling to be installed.

It’s certainly one of the messier sides of plastering, but sometimes it’s the only proper way to deal with an old, failing ceiling.

The Ceiling of Two Halves 👀

What started out as a straightforward ceiling repair turned into something a little bigger!

Once we inspected the ceiling properly, it quickly became clear that the existing plaster hadn’t been prepared correctly the first time around. Unfortunately, the plaster had very little adhesion and began coming away from the ceiling, meaning a simple repair was no longer going to cut it.

Due to the size of the bedroom and the amount of furniture that couldn’t be removed, we had to tackle the ceiling in two halves — completing one side first, then carefully moving and protecting everything before finishing the other.

Plenty of preparation, protection and patience involved, but everything was properly prepped this time and the ceiling has now been finished smooth and ready for decoration. ✅

Another reminder that with plastering, the preparation underneath is just as important as the finish you see on top.
