It's eviction time at Forgotten Flowers! 🏠🌸

I'm Mandy, a dahlia farmer in Lincolnshire, and today we're digging up our dahlia tubers.

Three things to remember:

🌸 Wait for the right conditions, generally after the first frost blackens the foliage.

🌸 Dig well away from the crown.

🌸 Lift gently. Your garden fork is not a weapon of mass destruction.

But we're not finished yet!

In Part 2, I'll show you what to do with those muddy tubers before winter storage. Get this bit wrong, and next summer could be a disappointment.

Follow Forgotten Flowers so you don't miss it!

Tell me in the comments: Are you lifting your dahlias for the first time this year, or are you an old hand at it? And who's ever accidentally stabbed a tuber with a fork? Confessions welcome! 😂

Last night I had a lovely evening at Boston & District Flower Lovers Club, with the wonderfully talented Helen Chambers from Evolve Flowers Ltd Flowers Ltd. 🌿🍂

The theme was autumn, but Helen took us on much more of a journey than that.

We started with those cosy autumn evenings by the fire, moved through the first frosts and the changing garden, and then, almost without noticing, found ourselves looking ahead to spring. 🌱

There was plenty of inspiration, beautiful flowers and arrangements, and lots to think about as we head into the quieter months in the flower garden.

As a relatively new flower farmer, I love evenings like this. There is always something new to learn, a different way of looking at flowers, or an idea that sends you home thinking, I wonder if I could grow that… 😂

Thank you to Helen for a really enjoyable and inspiring evening, and to everyone at Boston & District Flower Lovers Club District Flower Lovers Club for making it such a lovely night.

Now I just need to remember all those ideas when spring arrives! 🌸

🎄 DAY 1: Christmas decorating with dried flowers

I've decided that not everything that goes on your front door at Christmas has to be a wreath.

So I made a door bouquet instead.

Using dried flowers I've grown here at Forgotten Flowers, I wanted something that felt a little less traditional, could be made in all sorts of colour combinations and, importantly, didn't involve buying another Christmas decoration that will be shoved into a box in January.

There are dahlias, strawflowers, lavender and other dried bits from the flower farm in this one.

And I'm rather pleased with how it turned out. 🌿

This is Day 1 of showing you what I've been making with the dried flowers I've grown this year.

Because apparently I've spent the summer growing Christmas decorations without realising it. 😂

Would you choose a door bouquet or a traditional wreath?

🌸 WELL… THE WEATHER HAD OTHER IDEAS. 🌸

We said last week was going to be our LAST Pick Your Own Dahlia day.

The dahlias clearly didn’t get the memo. 😂

There are still loads of beautiful blooms out in the field, so we’ve decided to open the gates again TODAY.

But this week, we’re changing the rules…

🌸 £10 gets you 15 dahlias.
🌸 We’re NOT watching you.
🌸 We’re NOT counting your stems.
🌸 And if you accidentally end up with 15 for you and another 5 for Granny… well, who are we to argue? 😂

Basically, fill your bucket, enjoy the garden, have a wander and make the most of these ridiculously determined dahlias while they’re still flowering.

Pick Your Own Dahlias TODAY
🕙 10am–2pm
💷 £10 per bucket
🌸 15 stems included… give or take a Granny.

Once they're gone, they're gone.

And this time, we really mean it.

Probably. 👀

I grew these flowers for summer.
I'm still using them in October.
And some of them might even make it as far as Christmas. 🌸
One thing I've learned since starting the flower farm is that not every flower deserves a second career.
Some dry beautifully.
Some keep their colour.
Some keep their shape.
And some turn into botanical confetti the second you look at them.
😂
So when I'm choosing what to dry, I'm looking for strong stems, good structure and flowers that will actually hold their form.
The clever bit is thinking about this when you're planting the garden, rather than when you're desperately standing in October wondering what on earth you're going to do with all the flowers you've grown.
Fresh flowers for summer.
Dried flowers for autumn.
And potentially flowers for Christmas.
That's a garden working a little harder.
Would you like me to show you which flowers I'd actually grow specifically for drying? 🌿

You've lifted them.

You've washed them.

You've turned them upside down.

Now comes the bit that can make or break your dahlias over winter. 🌸

They need to dry properly before going into storage, and they need to be kept somewhere cool, dark and FROST-FREE.

And please label them.

Because October Mandy is absolutely convinced February Mandy will remember which dahlia is which.

She won't.

😂

Save this for when you lift yours.

And if you missed Part 1, that's where we actually lifted and washed them.

🚨 YOUR DAHLIAS ARE NOT IMMORTAL. EVEN IF YOU'VE BECOME EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED.

You've spent months growing them, feeding them, watering them and talking to them.

Now autumn's here and the British weather is eyeing them up.

If you're growing dahlias in pots, here's how to lift the tubers and give them a fighting chance of returning next year. 🌸

✅ Lift after frost blackens the foliage, or before severe frost threatens.
✅ Handle the tubers carefully.
✅ Dry them thoroughly.
✅ Label them and store them somewhere cool, dark and frost-free.

Because buying dahlias all over again next spring is an expensive way to discover that winter exists.

🌱 SAVE THIS for lifting day.

And be honest: have you ever lost a dahlia over winter?
