Sometimes it’s not always obvious what causing sleepless nights for a customer.

In this loft was squirrel and rat droppings. Client reports issue has been going on for a year.

Survey didn’t reveal any clear entry points and I suspected it’s a drain issue. Inspection chambers gave a few small clues.

CCTV was placed in the clients loft and within 3 hrs the issue is confirmed. Traps have been laid and hopefully Mr Rat will cooperate.

Will have advised a drainage survey to our client to identify and secure the entry point.

Its been a very busy summer with Wasps and Hornets. This was a tricky was nest. Wasps were entering on a high pitch roof. Even with very long extention poles we still couldnt reach it without spending a fortune on scaffolding.

The thermal showed me exactly were it was in this clients bedroom. With no loft access there was only one alternative. If left this nest would potentionly come throught the plaster board in to the clients room.

I drilled a 4mm hole into the plaster board and then treated the nest directly. You can see from the pictures the heat before and after. Nest was swiftly terminated and a happy customer.

Six bags of rat droppings taken out of these rooms!! 2 inches thick in droppings in places!! This is the basement of an office block being redeveloped.

Full biocide treatment undertaken for demolition workers who might come into contact with rodent droppings, urine, nesting materials, carcasses whilst gutting this room.

• Potentially fatal Hantavirus has been found in UK rats
• Hantavirus can lead to haemorrhagic fever in humans and is believed to be contracted by contact with or inhalation of dust from rodent droppings or urine.
• Salmonella can survive in rat faeces for up to 86 days
• E. coli has been recovered from rodent faeces for over 36 weeks.

These rats were getting in via a disused toilet probably over many many years via a drainage defect.

Rats in this wood pile! A well placed trap has caught a number of rats already and we have a happy customer!

We use very little rodenticide at HWPC. This customer has two labradors that roam the garden so any rodenticide use was out of the question no matter how well secured. As a smaller independent company we have the time to spend on site to conduct a thorough inspection and make recommendations to address the issue. Dealing with rats is the easy bit. Finding the entry point is the hard bit. Rats will often travel a long distance from where you are hearing them to where they are getting in.

We teach informal rifle training for potential clients but I’m pleased to say that we now offer an accredited sporting rifle course where we aim to teach the novice the core skills in safety, law and practical use of sporting rifle. The course called ‘Introduction to Sporting Rifle’ is a one day course ran in East Hampshire under the name of Black Lab Rifles of our sister company.

A few photos of some classic rodent entry points. Putting traps down is the easy bit. Finding the cause of why they are there, entry points and proofing is the hard part.

A detailed site survey is vital. Looking at ground level and upper level and drainage for possible entry points.

Rats in gardens!

It’s a very common call I get. And this case highlights some common issues.

The picture shows an area where I lifted 4 paving slabs to find 5 juvenile rats.

The cause is environmental issues. Excess bird feeders and much of it on the floor. Added to that garden clutter which provides a harbourage area for rats.

If this is your garden take a few simple measure to reduce the attractiveness of your garden to rats.

1. No food waste in compost heaps.
2. No bird food waste on the floor.
3. Used bird feeders which generate minimal waste.
4. Remove excess leaf litter.
5. Remove water sources
6. Tidy garden clutter to keep hiding places to a minimum.
7. Proof sheds so there no holes allowing them in or under.
8. Depending on your garden style keep foliage cut back and well maintained.
9. Keep climbing wall plants 12” below gutter level.

Follow these steps and keep your garden rodent free because the next stop is indoors!

Rifle training today with a new client. Pre DSC1 shooting lessons with a chap who had never shot before. Client took to it well and will pass his assessment with ease soon.

Next session we will continue with rifle safety and marksmanship skills and progress to a simulated stalk with pre placed targets in the woods before moving onto his 1st stalk over the winter.

I often hear when 1st going to a new client that they have tried to resolve the issue themselves. You can’t blame people for trying to save money. I do the same.

However it often ends up costing more money. Take ants - modern control of ants is usually using gel spot treatments. The gel is taken back to the nest by an ant and will wipe it out. With a powder from the garden centre it will only knock down surface ants and not address the root cause and the issue will persist.

Another skill and professional can offer you is a good survey looking entry points, signs of activity and of course what is the issue and what’s causing it.
Once this is known then the right treatment can be applied.
