⚡️ FAULT FINDING — WHEN A SIMPLE SHORT CIRCUIT UNCOVERS A MUCH BIGGER PROBLEM…
We were called out after a client replaced some switches themselves and unfortunately caused a short circuit. 🔥
After fault finding and making the immediate issue safe, it quickly became clear that this wasn't the only problem.
The property had a very old installation with lots of DIY alterations over the years, and what we found inside some of the cables was particularly concerning. 😳
🟢 THE WORST CASE OF "GREEN GOO" I'VE SEEN IN 20 YEARS! 🟢
Green goo is caused by the breakdown of plasticisers within certain older PVC cable insulation. Over time, the insulation can deteriorate, becoming sticky, oily and contaminated with that distinctive green substance.
It isn't simply something you wipe away. As the insulation deteriorates it can contribute to:
⚠️ Reduced insulation resistance
⚠️ Leakage currents
⚠️ Tracking and arcing
⚠️ Deterioration around connections
⚠️ Increased risk of overheating and fire
Interestingly, the property had previously had an EICR which was recorded as satisfactory.
An EICR assesses the condition of an installation at the time of inspection, and parts of an installation that aren't accessible aren't necessarily exposed or dismantled. This is a good example of why an installation can deteriorate or faults can develop over time.
After discussing everything with the client, we've decided that patching up an ageing installation with years of alterations isn't the right solution.
🔧⚡️ We're now booking the property in for a full rewire.
Sometimes a simple fault is just the tip of the iceberg.
Make it safe. Make it reliable. Make it right.
