The proposed solution is to retain one string of the original 7 × 310W panels and replace the second string with 5 × 455W JA Solar panels.
● Original array capacity: 4,340W
● Revised array capacity: 4,445W
This brings the system capacity as close as possible to the original specification while avoiding the need to replace the existing inverter. Retaining the inverter delivers a significant cost saving, as inverter replacement would add substantial equipment, labour, and commissioning costs. It also avoids the additional expense and disruption associated with a full system redesign, which would likely require further electrical alterations and a more extensive installation scope.
Due to the different dimensions and mounting points of the newer JA Solar panels, replacement roof hooks and mounting rails are recommended to ensure correct installation and structural integrity. Although these are marginally outside the manufacturer’s preferred mounting zones and would have benefited from new rails and hooks, this approach remains the most economical option and avoids the much higher cost of a complete redesign.
Overall, this approach provides a practical and cost-effective solution that maximises compatibility with the existing system, maintainsw performance close to the original design, and delivers clear savings compared with inverter replacement or a full system redesign.

This is never a situation we like to find ourselves in.
We were called out to inspect a solar PV system that we didn’t install after the homeowner raised concerns. The system was originally installed back in 2019, but a number of serious issues had since come to light.
Unfortunately, bird proofing had been fitted long after squirrels had already caused extensive damage. They had chewed through both the positive and negative DC cables, leaving bare conductors in contact with the metal framework of the array. Testing revealed over 100V DC to earth – a serious electrical fault. The squirrel nest itself also presented a significant fire risk.
As we investigated further, more installation issues became apparent. None of the roof tiles had been notched around the roof hooks, causing unnecessary stress on the roof covering, and there was no mechanical protection on the DC strings where they passed through the roof. We also noticed that there was no adequate spacing between the top row and bottom row of the panels.
Once the array was removed, we found that 7 of the 14 panels had severe damage to their wiring and MC4 connectors, making them unsafe to reinstall.
Our solution:
✔️ Remove the 7 damaged panels.
✔️ Install 5 × 455W JA Solar panels, which will generate slightly more power than the previous 7 damaged modules.
✔️ Adjust the mounting rails so they meet current installation requirements.
✔️ Grind and notch all roof tiles correctly so they sit flush without pressure points.
✔️ Replace damaged MC4 connectors and install mechanical protection to all DC cabling where required.
✔️ Inspect all inverter connections and rectify anything that doesn’t meet current standards.
✔️ Fully recommission the system with comprehensive testing, new certification, and a detailed report of all remedial works carried out.
This is a great reminder that not all solar installations are created equal. A poorly installed system isn’t just inefficient—it can become a serious safety hazard. If you have concerns about your solar PV system, especially one that’s several years old, it’s always worth having it professionally inspected.
Safety and quality should never be compromised.

Infrastructure upgrade, ev charger and additional battery storage. Yes that box was down on the delivery note as 78kg…. I mean how else are you supposed to carry them 😂 nice little job completed in a reasonable time frame (not without their complications) but hats out to .uk for being absolutely top guys on helping us get v3 batteries to pare up with v2. Top level service!
