Ticks are waking up!

While they are most active in spring and summer, ticks can be found at any time when the temperature is above freezing. Already we've pulled two off of our farm dog, Magpie.

Although not all blacklegged ticks carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, and not everyone who is bitten by an infected tick will develop signs and symptoms of Lyme disease, it is important to be diligent. Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully with antibiotics, but untreated Lyme disease can cause prolonged health issues and harm your heart, nerves, liver, and joints or more.

Blacklegged ticks are spreading to new areas of the province because of climate change, which is altering the average and prolonged seasonal temperatures that have historically defined their range. They can also spread by traveling on birds and deer. Be mindful when you are in areas that are wooded or have tall grasses. Covering up, using insect repellent, maintaining your property, and checking yourself & your pets will be helpful in avoiding tick bites.
