If youโre constantly topping up your boiler pressure, youโre not alone โ itโs one of the most common boiler faults we see. Low boiler pressure can cause your heating to stop working efficiently or shut down altogether, especially during colder months.
At Turnberry Plumbing & Heating Ltd, we regularly attend boiler pressure issues.

There are several common reasons why your boiler pressure keeps falling:
๐ง Leaks in the heating system -
Even a small leak from a radiator valve, pipework, or inside the boiler can slowly reduce pressure. You might notice damp patches, corrosion, or frequent pressure loss with no obvious cause.
๐ง Faulty expansion vessel -
The expansion vessel controls pressure changes when your heating is on. If it loses air or fails, pressure can rise too high during operation and then drop back down as the system cools โ often leading to boiler lockouts.
๐ง Recently bled radiators -
Bleeding radiators releases trapped air, which causes a drop in system pressure. This usually just requires the boiler to be safely topped up via the filling loop.

โ ๏ธ Boiler pressure rising too high when the heating is on
โ ๏ธ Pressure dropping back to zero once the system cools
โ ๏ธ Radiators not heating evenly or going cold
โ ๏ธ Boiler fault codes or repeated shutdowns
A healthy boiler pressure should typically sit between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when cold.

โ๏ธ Correctly re-pressurising the boiler
โ๏ธ Repairing visible or hidden leaks
โ๏ธ Re-charging or replacing a failed expansion vessel
โ๏ธ Carrying out a full boiler health check to prevent further issues
Leaving pressure problems unresolved can lead to breakdowns, damaged components, and more expensive repairs down the line.
