🐠💦 Making More Room for the Goldfish! 🌿

Sometimes you don't need to start again — you just need to make better use of what you've already got!

This project involved extending an existing goldfish pond to create a larger, more attractive and practical space for the fish, while also improving the overall design of the pond.

The existing pond was deconstructed and the extension excavated to create a finished pond measuring approximately 3m x 2m, with a deepest point of around 650mm.

But this wasn't simply a case of making the pond bigger. We also redesigned the layout to give it a much better finished appearance. 👇

🌱 A marginal planting shelf was created around approximately 60% of the pond, providing the perfect depth for plants while adding plenty of greenery around the water.

🪨 A low rock edge was constructed around the perimeter, creating a formal yet natural-looking finish while completely hiding the liner from view.

💧 A strong polyester underlay and Butyl rubber pond liner were installed to provide a durable, long-lasting foundation for the extended pond.

🐠 The increased size and depth provide the goldfish with more room to swim and thrive, while the redesigned layout makes the pond a much more attractive feature within the garden.

🌿 Additional rocks were incorporated into the rear planting area to tie the whole design together and blend the new extension seamlessly with the existing pond.

Once everything was complete, the pond was cleaned, refilled and planted with a selection of pond plants to help it settle into its new surroundings.

The result? A larger, better-designed goldfish pond that gives the fish more space while creating a beautiful feature for the garden. 👌🐠💦

Fallen leaves and organic debris can cause a whole host of problems if they're left to build up — from blocked pumps and filters to poor water quality and excess sludge on the bottom of your pond.

Here are a few simple things you can do to prepare your pond for autumn:

🍂 Remove leaves regularly
Don't let leaves sit and decompose in the water. A pond net or regular skimming can make a big difference.

💧 Check your filtration system
Give your pump, filter and skimmer a check before the heavier leaf fall begins. Autumn is not the time to discover that your filtration system isn't working properly!

🐟 Keep an eye on your fish
As temperatures drop, fish become less active and their feeding requirements change. Avoid overfeeding and keep an eye out for any unusual behaviour.

🌿 Clear away dying vegetation
Trim back dead or dying plants to reduce the amount of organic matter entering the pond over winter.

A Complete Pond Refurbishment 💦🌿

This pond recently underwent a complete refurbishment, with the aim of creating a cleaner, more natural-looking finish that works beautifully with the surrounding garden.

We completely drained the pond, safely housed the fish and wildlife during the works, and got to work on the refurbishment.

The project included:

💧 Installing a brand-new woven underlay and Butyl pond liner
🪨 Constructing a new York stone internal wall to completely hide the liner
🌿 Creating a new marginal planting area using natural river shingle, eliminating the need for visible planting baskets
🌊 Building a new natural rock water return from the filtration system
🌳 Neatly clamping the liner beneath the decking with a natural oak cladding board
🚫 Removing the existing bridge to open up the pond and improve the overall design
🧱 Reworking the surrounding brickwork and paving to create a much cleaner pond edge
🍃 Removing the accumulated silt and reusing it around the garden as a natural fertiliser

Once the construction work was complete, we thoroughly cleaned and tidied the area, refilled the pond and carefully returned everything to its new and improved home.

The result is a pond where the liner is completely hidden, the planting blends naturally into the design and the new water return creates an attractive focal point at the end of the pond. 👌

It was a detailed project with plenty of work involved, but we're really pleased with how it turned out — and, most importantly, so is the customer! 😃

🚨 Another Pond Brought Back to Life! 🌿🐟

This pond was in desperate need of some TLC when we arrived. The water was so murky that catching the fish was a challenge, and it quickly became clear there was more going on beneath the surface.

After safely relocating all of the fish into a temporary holding tank, we drained the pond and uncovered the real issue... the bottom drain had become detached and was sitting upside down! We repaired it before giving the entire pond a thorough deep clean.

💦 We:
✅ Jet washed the pond walls and floor
✅ Flushed the bottom drains and pipework
✅ Deep cleaned the waterfall, pump and filtration system
✅ Serviced the UV clarifier
✅ Installed a brand-new pump after the original one finally gave up due to its age

The pond was then left to refill overnight before we returned the following day to reintroduce the fish, test the system and make sure everything was running perfectly.

Seeing the fish swimming happily in clear water again—and a very happy customer at the end of the job—is exactly why we love what we do! 👌

A quick update from site.
Recent rain meant cementing work had to pause for a bit, but progress never stopped. Our team continued with rock placement, digging and shaping the pond, working through some very muddy conditions to keep the project moving forward.

It might not be the prettiest stage, but it’s an important one. Thanks to the team for cracking on, whatever the weather throws at them 💪
