Before & after...

Just a little insight into our contemporary courtyard garden which won the Pro Landscaper Project Awards Winner for a build under £50k last week.

The Brief:
To transform a square, flat garden surrounded by brick walls and fencing into a contemporary, low maintenance space. The garden needed to be flexible to accommodate a couple who liked to have the family and grandchildren over as well as sit out and enjoy themselves.

The garden was to be used all year round and maintenance needed to be low, with modern materials and easy to clean surfaces. Both sun and shade needed to be accounted for. Likewise the garden needed to be enjoyed during the evening and into the night.

The Garden:
Out of an option of three very different concepts, the fire pit garden was born. The space was split into four zones tied together with a feature porcelain clad wall and perimeter planting bed.

Near the house a raised composite deck walkway provided floor level access to the outside. A large porcelain patio suitable for a table, chairs and BBQ was situated directly opposite.

Stepping off the patio onto a bridge of artificial lawn takes you over to the sunken fire pit area. A central Corten steel fire pit acts as the main focal point to the garden. Chunky feature walls also contain Corten steel fern leaves with glimpses through to the lush planting behind.

A floating composite bench hugs the wall and hovers above the porcelain patio with ease. It provides enough seating for up to 6 people with views across to the feature tree bed and patio areas.

The garden features a full smart lighting system that can be controlled with voice command or from a phone app.

Planting needed to be low maintenance. Feature Amelanchier trees gather around the firepit and patio areas with an island border opposite containing a stunning Japanese Acer. A small amount of perennial plants create a dividing border between the two lawn areas as well as outskirts and infill of the shrub and tree borders to the rear fence line.

"No creature is fully itself till it is, like the dandelion, opened in the bloom of pure relationship to the sun, the entire living cosmos." D. H. Lawrence. Dandelions require some sun to thrive but they are survivors and will probably never be eradicated. They will far outlive humans at any rate!

We can learn to live with them however, along with the rest of nature. and maybe even learn love them a little...

Why do new the leaves on Beech trees (Fagus sylvatica) have silky hairs?

Silky hairs are actually quite common on new spring leaves, just like the Horse Chestnut in the recent post. They trap a thin layer of air next to the leaf which in turn protects the leaf it from evapotranspiration (the combined process of evaporation and transpiration, that is the movement of water from the land surface to the atmosphere). This stops the tender new leaves drying out and can protect it from frost. They can also protect the leaf from some attacks by insects.

Beech leaves eventually loose their hairs and become darker green as the year moves on.

Down in the forest, a creature stirs....

The spider has been in hibernation and a few days of warm sun has awoken the beast. No creatures here however, just a Dryopteris affinis with its 'Crozier' before unfurling fully it’s 1m+ foliage. Truly an impressive plant but it’s all about the detail. The best bit, the unfurling is been and gone in a few days. Don’t forget to enjoy your garden all year round…

A planting plan is a drawing that specifies the plants that will be put into your garden. A Kirman Design planting plan will show the position and number of each plant along with it’s botanical name.

We don’t have planting plans for every garden. Not every garden needs it or has a budget for it for that matter.
Plants are carefully selected to fit within the space they are allocated, and by using a planting plan, this will ensure the light, soil and space is perfect for each individual plant.

Do you need help with planting out your garden? Why not give us a call to tell us about your project and can explain how we ca help you.

European Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum)

Horse chestnuts are celebrated by children for their conkers in spiney green cases but less people notice them in full flow at the other end of the year. The sticky red buds are dormant for the winter and then in late spring, shoot out a stem at mind bending speed and produce a flourish of leaves that pop out and immediately are limp, in almost exactly the same format that Butterflies emerge from their chrysalises. The fresh new growth is exciting, green, hairy and full of energy.

Muscari armeniacum

I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with Grape Hyacinth. They can look awful after flowering and then in summer, they struggle with hot weather and can be difficult to remove once established. When grown in drifts, they really can be a delightful sight however. They are good for cutting and are great pollinators for flying insects and of course they are really easy to grow. I also love the fact that they can be blue one munite and purple the next as the sun comes out!

Planted under deciduous trees, they form good ground cover which creates an impenetrable matt that generally keeps weeds at bay.

Just take a moment to actually look at the flowers close up and marvel at the intricacy of each flower. Not something you see every day…
