The smallest room, doing two jobs.

A downstairs loo that's also the utility. Washer and dryer stacked behind a door, worktop over the basin, shelves above for the towels and the bits.

Herringbone floor, so it reads as a room and not a cupboard.

If you've got a space like this that's only doing one thing, it could do two.

A full-width media unit in a deep blue, built to sit under an oak ceiling without fighting it. Cupboards below, open shelving either side of the screen, and the whole run on one clean line.

Paint gives you the colour. Oak keeps the room. Both in one wall.

Drawers where the hoover used to live.

The space under an open staircase is usually a hoover, a pile of shoes and a shape nobody can use.

Here it's a run of drawers on the low side, open shelving where it gets taller, and a cupboard at the deep end for the things that only come out at Christmas. Finished to match the oak.

Every house has this space. Most of them are wasting it.

Deep teal, right through, including the backs of the shelves where most people lose their nerve.

Shoe racks angled so you see the whole shoe. Rails at two heights. A run of drawers deep enough for the things that usually end up on the floor.

It's a spare room. It was a spare room a fortnight before this.

Media wall with the fire set into it, shelving lit either side, cupboards underneath for everything with a cable.

The trick is the lighting. Warm strips at the back of each shelf, so the wall glows in the evening instead of being a black rectangle with a fire under it.

Nothing on the floor. Nothing on show that shouldn't be.

The doors that give you the room back.

Hinged wardrobe doors need a metre of floor in front of them that you can never use. In a small bedroom that's the difference between a room and a corridor.

Sliders take none. Mirror them and the room reads twice the size, which in a north-facing bedroom is the cheapest light you'll ever buy.

Black frames if you want it sharp. Full mirror if you want it gone.

Machines behind doors.

Washer on the bottom, dryer stacked on top, both on a frame that takes the weight and the wobble. Shelves next to them for the baskets and the powder. Two doors, and the whole lot disappears.

Open it to do the washing. Close it to have a kitchen again.

Small job. Changes a room you use every day.

If I say it'll work, it's because I've built it before. If I say it won't, that's worth more to you than the job is to me.

The trends come and go. Doing it properly doesn't.

Cut to the slope.

Flat-pack is made for a square room with a flat ceiling. This loft has neither.

So the tall unit was cut down to sit under the slope, the shelving went in where a full-height door couldn't open, and the drawers went where you can actually stand up to use them.

Half the flat-pack we're called to won't fit as it comes. That's usually why we're called.

If yours is going into a loft, an alcove or anything with a chimney breast, send us a photo before you start.
