A tree’s first summer is the most perilous. While established trees have deep root networks, newly planted trees have small, shallow root systems. Relying on surface soil moisture means that a young tree can lose water faster than it can be replaced.

Watering once a week with a slow soak of 40 litres or more, thoroughly saturating the soil, encourages roots to grow downwards into cooler, naturally damp earth.

Hand-pull aggressive weeds and long grass within a 1-metre circle around the tree to protect it.

Surround with several inches of mulch to suppress competition and keep the soil cool and damp, being sure to leave a gap between the mulch and the stem of the tree to avoid rotting.

Across the UK, woodland creation and tree planting projects are becoming an increasingly important part of environmental improvement, biodiversity, community engagement and long-term land use.​

But as more projects take place, there is also more public scrutiny around how they are delivered. Social media posts and community discussions often raise concerns about sites being left untidy, young trees being planted in unsuitable ground, the wrong tree shelters being used, or contractors disappearing once the planting is complete.

These problems do not always come from bad intentions. Often, they happen when projects are approached as a numbers exercise, rather than as the creation of a living landscape that needs the right planning, planting and maintenance to succeed.

Choosing the right contractor is therefore one of the most important decisions in any woodland creation project. A good contractor should understand the site, the soil, the species, the protection needed and the long-term care required. Most importantly, they should care about what the site looks like and how it performs long after planting day.
