Why does our pilot have an Elios 3 above his head?

It’s all part of the relocalisation procedure.

Before each flight, our pilots carry out a series of checks and preparations to make sure the Elios 3 is ready for the environment it’s about to enter.

As part of relocalisation, the drone is held above the pilot’s head and rotated through a full circle, allowing it to scan the take-off area and establish its position within the existing map.

For larger inspections, this becomes massively beneficial. Multiple flights can be accurately aligned and merged into one point cloud, rather than leaving us with individual datasets from each flight.

This gives our pilots a much clearer picture of what has already been inspected, helps maintain coverage across the asset and ultimately creates one consolidated view for the client.

Have you ever seen the Elios 3 inspect a bridge at night?

Large structures can be difficult to navigate and even harder to keep track of when you’re inspecting them up close.

That’s where the Elios 3’s live LiDAR point cloud becomes incredibly useful.

As our pilot moves around the structure, the point cloud builds a 3D representation of the environment, providing spatial context alongside the visual inspection and helping us understand exactly where we are within the asset.
