If you missed it first time round, Engineered Deconstruction – The Future of Demolition is now available via the The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Academy.

In it, Colemans CEO Mark Coleman FCIOB, MIDE, AIExpE and our Sustainability Champion Titus Akpan MCIOB MSc BEng challenge long-held assumptions about end-of-life buildings and demonstrate how a more considered, engineered approach can retain embodied carbon, reduce waste, and support circular economy principles.

Drawing on real project experience, this webinar shares insights from complex sites where early planning, material assessment and close collaboration have enabled materials, particularly structural steel, to be recovered and reused at significantly higher value. It includes learnings from one of the world’s largest steel reuse initiatives, highlighting how large-scale reuse can be delivered safely, commercially and at pace.

The session also explores the technical, commercial and safety considerations involved in engineered deconstruction, including material testing, certification to British Standards, and the use of material passports to provide traceability and confidence for reuse.

If you’re working in construction, development, design or sustainability, this is a genuinely valuable session and well worth your time as CPD.

Some fantastic drone images in this article by Rachael McMenemy from BBC News, of the now completely transformed site at Abington Street, Northampton, where the former M&S and BHS buildings used to stand.

It's been a great project for Colemans to be involved with and we're looking forward to handing over the site to West Northamptonshire Council and Capital&Centric for the next phase of development very soon.

🎉 NEW APPOINTMENT - CONTRACTS MANAGER

A strong business is built on the people behind it, and the experience they bring with them.

We’re pleased to share that Mark Fanning has been appointed as Contracts Manager.

Mark has been with Colemans for 10 years, starting out as a Site Supervisor before progressing into a Project Manager role. Over that time, he has delivered a wide range of schemes and developed a strong, practical understanding of how our projects are delivered from the ground up.

He knows how our projects work because he’s been at the centre of them, managing the detail, the challenges and the expectations that come with complex sites.

Over recent months, Mark has stepped into a broader role supporting our Group Contracts Director, Gareth Rowe, and the wider Project Management team. The impact has been clear, with improvements in coordination, communication and overall efficiency across projects.

This appointment recognises that contribution and reflects the depth of experience already within the business.

As Contracts Manager, Mark will focus on strengthening how projects are planned, coordinated and delivered, aligning teams and resources while maintaining a clear focus on safety, programme and commercial performance.
It’s a role that connects the moving parts of the business, and one that benefits from someone who understands how it all works in practice.

At Colemans, we place real value on developing our people and creating opportunities for progression. Mark’s journey is a strong example of that in action.

Congratulations Mark!

Wishing you a very Happy Easter, from all of us at Colemans! 😜

Over the past week, we’ve been able to donate Easter eggs to a number of organisations that support children in the communities we work in.

In Peckham, Danny Atkinson and Anthony Hoareau dropped off eggs to Bird in Bush Primary School just before half term, making sure they reached the children in time for the break.

Through our client at West Northamptonshire Council , we were introduced to Northamptonshire Children's Trust who put us in touch with Jeanette Walsh. A lovely lady who this Easter is collecting eggs for vulnerable children and young people across the county. Jeanette arranged for our donation to be shared across a number of children’s homes in Northampton.

And finally in Birmingham, our Marketing Director Claire Payne delivered 50 eggs to Birmingham Children's Hospital and Charity, where they’ll be given to children attending A&E over the Easter period.

Just a little gesture to bring a smile and a bit of joy to children and young people where it’s needed this Easter.

A big thank you to everyone involved in making it happen

A great moment to mark on site this week.

Yesterday, our team were invited to take part in a joint photo and video with the client’s project team, capturing the completion of the deconstruction of the final building on a scheme spanning a couple of years.

It’s not something that happens on every project, and it meant a lot to the people involved.

Since 2024, the team have been working on a complex, highly controlled site environment, delivering the engineered deconstruction of six buildings in total. Each one has brought its own challenges, from programme constraints to working within a setting where security, sensitivity and precision really matter.
Reaching the completion of the sixth and final building is a significant milestone, but more than that, it reflects the relationship that’s been built along the way.

Projects like this rely on trust.
On clear communication.
On teams working together to deliver safely, responsibly and without disruption.

That’s exactly what this group has done.

As Colemans Project Manager Anthony Christou put it...

“This has been a challenging project in a very controlled environment, but one the team have handled exceptionally well. Building that level of trust with the client over time has been key, and to be invited to be part of their own project story at the end is a great reflection of the way everyone has worked together.”

A strong finish to a demanding yet rewarding project, and a team that should be proud of the part they’ve played in it.

Last week, we said goodbye to Sue as she retired from Colemans.

Sue has been a valued part of our finance team and someone many across the business have known and worked with over the years. Having worked for Colemans not once but twice during her career, she has been part of the business for an important chapter of its story.

Her dedication and contribution have been hugely appreciated, and she leaves with our thanks and very best wishes.

Everyone at Colemans wishes Sue a happy, healthy and very well-deserved retirement

This week marks Women in Construction Week in the UK 👷‍♀️

Construction is evolving and the challenges facing the built environment today demand more than traditional thinking. They require collaboration, care, communication and problem solving across many disciplines.

That is particularly true in areas like engineered deconstruction, where projects often involve complex planning, stakeholder coordination, environmental responsibility and careful delivery in sensitive environments.

Across Colemans, the women in our team play an important role in keeping projects and the wider business running effectively. From finance, HR and administration to project support, marketing, innovation and everything in between, their organisation, attention to detail and people-focused approach help underpin the safe and professional delivery our clients expect.

More broadly, women bring valuable perspectives to the construction industry. They strengthen communication, bring fresh ways of thinking to problem solving and help shape more collaborative project environments. As the industry continues to focus on safety, sustainability and responsible site transformation, those qualities are increasingly important. Engineering, sustainability, project management, commercial roles, planning and operations all offer meaningful career opportunities within our sector.

So, this week we recognise the women who are part of the Colemans team and the many others across the industry helping to shape a stronger, more progressive future for construction. And we hope more women continue to see it as a place where they can build rewarding careers.

A little shout-out to Bolehall Swifts U9s, managed by our very own Karl Douglas from our Specialist Cutting Services Division, who recently enjoyed their mascot day at Sutton Coldfield Town.

The team looked the part stepping out in their sponsored kits and did themselves proud. Plenty of smiles, great energy and a brilliant experience for the lads.

We know how much time and effort goes into grassroots football behind the scenes, so it’s great to see the team enjoying moments like this.

Well done to Karl, the coaches, the players and all the families who support them week in, week out. 👏⚽
