This is probably the bit most people actually care about.

According to government estimates, a plug in solar system could save somewhere around £70 to £110 per year.

Not exactly retirement money then. 😂

But that's not really the point.

These systems aren't designed to compete directly with a full rooftop solar installation. They're mainly aimed at people who can't have conventional solar.

And whether they're worthwhile will depend heavily on YOUR house.

For example...

☀️ Is there somewhere sunny to position the panels?

☀️ Are they going to be heavily shaded?

☀️ Are you actually at home using electricity during the day?

☀️ Is your electrical installation suitable?

☀️ Do you already have a suitable socket?

That's important because currently you don't get paid for unused electricity from these systems.

So if you're generating electricity while you're out all day and not using much of it, some of the benefit is simply disappearing back into the grid.

If you're home during the day though, you've got things like the fridge, freezer, router, TV, computers and other appliances quietly using electricity.

That's where it starts becoming more interesting.

The other thing I'd consider is the total cost.

A £500 or £600 solar kit might make sense.

A £600 solar kit that then needs electrical work, an outside socket and other bits doing before you can safely use it?

Different calculation altogether.

Personally, I think these are interesting.

They're certainly not going to replace proper rooftop solar, but for somebody who can't have conventional solar they could give people another option that simply wasn't available before.

And considering they've only just become legal here, I suspect we're going to hear quite a bit more about them.

☀️ Plug in solar... before you rush off to Currys with your credit card.

Yesterday I mentioned that plug in solar panels are now legal in Great Britain.

They're designed so homeowners can install them themselves without needing an electrician.

BUT...

That doesn't mean anything goes.

There are quite a few rules.

For starters:

⚡ The complete kit needs to meet the new UK requirements and be listed as compliant.

⚡ Only ONE plug in solar kit is allowed per home.

⚡ It must plug directly into a permanent wall socket.

⚡ No extension leads.

⚡ No multi socket adaptors.

⚡ You also need to notify your local electricity network operator after installing it.

There's another important consideration that caught my attention as an electrician.

Is your existing electrical installation actually suitable for it?

The Institute of Engineering and Technology has raised concerns about some older homes because their wiring and protective devices weren't necessarily designed with electricity being fed back into a circuit like this.

The government guidance recommends modern residual current protection and that the electrical installation is in good condition.

So although you don't NEED an electrician to install one, I'd personally want to know the electrics I was plugging it into were suitable first.

Especially if you've got an older fuse board and haven't had the electrics checked for years.

DIY doesn't automatically mean "plug it in and hope for the best". 👀

☀️ You can now plug solar panels into a normal socket...

Yep. I had to read that twice as well.

As of the 27th August, plug in solar panels can now legally be bought and installed in Great Britain.

Rather than having a full solar installation fitted to your roof, these come as a kit with one or two panels, a small inverter and, strangely enough, a normal three pin plug.

You position the panels somewhere sunny, plug them into a suitable socket and the electricity they generate feeds into your home's electrical circuit.

Your appliances then use that electricity before taking electricity from the grid.

The interesting bit is who these are aimed at.

They could potentially be useful if:

☀️ You live in a flat and don't have your own roof

☀️ You're renting

☀️ Your roof isn't suitable for solar

☀️ You've got a sunny garden, wall or balcony

☀️ You're thinking about moving and don't want a permanent solar installation

And because you can unplug them and take them with you, they're quite different from traditional rooftop solar.

There is a catch though.

Actually, there are quite a few catches. 😂

Tomorrow I'll go through some of the rules because despite being sold as DIY and not requiring an electrician to install them, you definitely can't just buy any old solar panel off the internet and stick a plug on it.

💡 Another small job completed in Bradford.

These old lantern lights had been on the garage for around 20 years and, to be fair to them, they'd done their time. 😂

We replaced them with some much more modern up and down lights with built in sensors.

Now when the customer walks down the drive, the lights automatically come on.

No remembering to switch them on.

No leaving them on all night.

Just a simple little upgrade that looks better and makes life that bit easier. 👍
