Last stove of the week, and a lovely one to finish on!

This multi-fuel stove had a thorough sweep and our signature premium stove service today, rounding off a busy Friday of a couple of new-homeowner inspections and plenty of chimney sweeps.

Brushes packed away, it’s time to put our own feet up for the weekend.

Thanks to everyone who’s had us round this week. Have a cracking weekend!

Years of waiting. Sorted in one visit.

We arrived for a chimney sweep today, but before we’d even stepped through the door, our external inspection revealed a chimney cowl that had rotted away.

The homeowner explained that another firm had promised to return and replace it years ago. They never came back, and the job remained outstanding.

We had the equipment, the right replacement and the experience to sort it there and then. So we did.

After completing our thorough standard chimney sweep, we safely set up the ladders, removed the deteriorated cowl and fitted a top-quality UK-manufactured replacement suitable for solid fuel.

No need to arrange another appointment or wait for someone to come back. By the time we packed away, it was done.

One visit. A thorough sweep, a new cowl, and a longstanding problem finally sorted.

You’ve seen the work this week. Here’s the advice behind it.

After our recent chimney cowl posts and videos, we’ve put together a more detailed article for anyone wondering what belongs on top of their chimney.

What’s the difference between a bird guard and a rain cap? Why does the appliance affect the choice of cowl? And which signs should you mention at your next chimney sweep?

Our latest article brings it all together in plain English, including when a closer inspection may be needed.

A useful three-minute read, whether you’ve lived in your home for years or have just picked up the keys.

We don’t often work weekends, but this was a lovely job to make an exception for.

One of our longstanding customers has swapped their old inglenook open fire for this handsome Chesney’s 5 Series log burner, just in time before winter kicks in.

We fitted it with a 316-grade Dragonflex flue liner and a top-quality clip-on cowl up on the chimney. Downstairs, the new stove looks right at home beneath that beautifully carved surround, keeping the character of the old fireplace.

There’s something especially rewarding about doing a job like this for someone who’s trusted us to look after their chimney over the years.

A proper fire to settle down beside when the Yorkshire weather turns.
Have a lovely weekend, everyone.

One of the highlights of our week: proper VIP treatment with freshly pressed coffee, Yorkshire tea and homemade lemon cake.

We’re always grateful for a good brew, but homemade lemon cake alongside it? That’s us well and truly spoilt.

The only difficulty was three pieces of cake between two of us. A delicate negotiation.

A big thank you for the lovely hospitality. Have a cracking weekend, everyone.

When did you last look at the top of your chimney?

Probably not recently. And that's perfectly understandable!

Chimney cowls and bird guards spend years exposed to the Yorkshire weather, and their condition can easily go unnoticed from the ground.

Take a look at these before-and-after photographs from one of our recent jobs.

The original bird guard had deteriorated considerably, leaving the chimney vulnerable to birds and nesting material entering the flue.

A properly selected chimney cowl can make a real difference:

- Helps prevent birds and debris entering the chimney.
- Provides protection against rain entering the flue.
- Is designed to withstand the conditions associated with the appliance and fuel being used.

But here's something worth knowing: not every chimney cowl is suitable for every chimney.

Open fires, wood-burning stoves and gas appliances can have different requirements. Choosing the correct terminal is just as important as fitting it properly.

It's one of those things you rarely notice when it's doing its job, but certainly worth paying attention to.

Stove Fitting / dropping a liner

First fire of the season.

There’s something special about lighting the stove again when the colder mornings start rolling in.

For a clean, controlled start, we always recommend the top-down lighting method — with the larger logs underneath, smaller kindling above and the firelighter right at the top.

And before that first proper burn, it’s well worth making sure the chimney or flue system has been professionally swept and the stove properly serviced and checked.

Clean flue. Serviced stove. Properly lit fire.

Now we’re ready for autumn.

That old cowl had seen better days—and a closer look showed just how much it had rusted away.

One of today’s customers called us in for a chimney sweep and cowl replacement. We started with a thorough sweep of the unlined masonry chimney serving their Hunter multi-fuel stove, then headed onto the roof.

Off came the corroded remains, and on went a top-quality British-made Midtec cowl. A proper upgrade, with a rain cover and bird guard to help protect the freshly swept chimney.

A satisfying before and after, with some cracking Yorkshire views while we worked.
