Maize beginning to fly now we finally have some warmth! Montrose damage by the coast, but plenty of tinged plants further in land. Herbicides going on next week and nutrition is complete.

A week of 2 halves.

1st half BYDV (Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus) is showing itself in cereals throughout Sussex. Even where insecticides have been used, there still seems to be exceptional pressure this season. Not a huge surprise given the aphid numbers we found in the autumn, but a kick in the teeth none the less.

2nd half was pleasing to see winter beans about to flower and the slow down of chocolate spot in them! Osr receiving its mid flower fungicide and spring barley has shot out the ground. 👌

A good way to end the week 👌 ☀️

Another busy week on farm. Winter wheat moving at an alarmingly fast pace, but the majority of T0’s now applied. It won’t belong until we are back through again. Not the year to hold back on fungicide spend with the amount of septoria in crops! Winter beans 🫘 are beginning to grow away from chocolate spot and hopefully some dry weather will help this further! 🤞

Made the most of the sunshine crop walking this week. Started off well, but as expected chocolate spot in winter beans is showing its self! Without quick treatment, it will spread over the plant and become a write off. Autumn herbicides have on the whole been excellent, but there is always one or two black grass plants that survive 🤦‍♂️.

Another week of SMN sampling complete. Despite having 48mm of rain a day we kept on going. Rush is on to get through it all before the first round of nitrogen fertiliser in late February. Although it’s hard to believe considering how wet it is out there 💦 🦆 🌾
