Proud moment for the GRL team 🔧

This is Josh, our newest qualified gas engineer, on his first boiler repair. I'm proud of him, and we're not there yet. As a team we'll keep pushing to be better, always working towards perfection.

The problem: a combi boiler with no hot water.

Josh found the diverter valve wasn't motoring over, so it was replaced. The plate heat exchanger was also blocked, so the hot water would run for a few minutes and then go cold.

We gave our client two options: clean the plate heat exchanger out, or replace it. He went for the replacement, and he now has hot water back in his home.

The boiler and central heating hadn't been looked after for a long time, so we've also advised a system powerflush and a boiler service to keep everything running as it should.

As we always say, we recommend the best approach for the best result to all our clients, and then we let the client decide which route they'd like to go.

On this boiler install, we believed there was an existing waste water drain we could use for the condensate pipe. Once we got into it, we found the pipe actually ran to an old, abandoned soakaway. That's not a safe or compliant place to terminate boiler condensate.

So we changed the plan. We fitted a condensate neutraliser and set it into a bed of limestone chippings, which neutralise the acidity in the condensate before it disperses into the ground. That means it's discharged safely and within regulations.

This is the kind of thing that turns up on jobs all the time. What's underground or behind the wall isn't always what anyone expected. Finding a way around it that still meets the regulations matters to us as much as the finished install.

People want the magic. Like Houdini, the real trick is in the process.

We recently installed a new cloakroom for a client. To tidy up the existing pipework properly, we had to drain down the heating system.

Normally that's routine. This one was a bit different: the hot water is heated by gravity circulation from the boiler, with pumped central heating, all run by an Ideal Vulcan RS 55 that's been doing its job for decades. Older systems like this don't always come back to life as easily as they went down. Air locks, circuits that won't circulate and fittings that haven't been disturbed in years can turn a simple refill into a proper job.

The video shows how we got the heating and hot water back on by backfilling the system.

Please don't try this yourself. You're seeing the finish, but on jobs like this there are nearly always unforeseen obstacles along the way, and knowing how to deal with them safely is what gets you there.

Everyone loves a before and after. We want you to see the bit in between too, because that's where the real work happens.

Dream, people. Hope, people. Most times dreams become reality, and when they don't, you've lost nothing but a dream.

That doesn't mean dreaming without the work. Persistence and dedication have to come with it.

GRL was invited to Screwfix Live, and the team and I had planned to go together. Then an impromptu trip came up the same week, and for several reasons I couldn't cancel it. The guys held the fort while I was away, so I gave the boys the day off, fully paid, with a bit of spenny money 😊 to go and represent GRL.

These two young men did not disappoint, and I'm proud of them. Here are Josh and Harry flying the GRL flag.

We're not perfect, but we'll keep chasing perfection with a common goal, determination and belief. Building a strong team of strong individuals with big goals comes with its ups and downs. But if we all pull the bus in the same direction, we'll reach our common goal and our individual ones too.

Between the Magic

People love magic. Houdini made his escapes look impossible, and the crowd only ever saw two moments: him going in, and him coming out.

What they never saw was everything in between. The hours of practice, the preparation, the problems solved before anyone was watching. The magic was never in the reveal. It was in the process.

Our work is the same. Most people see the finished bathroom, the new boiler, the clean lines. They never see the leak we traced behind the tiles, the pipework we had to reroute, or the decisions that make a finish last twenty years instead of two.

So we are starting a new series. Each post will take one real challenge from site, what we found, how we worked through it, and what it took to get the finish right.

Not the biggest room, so everything in it had to earn its place. A few of the choices are worth explaining.

The shower set is chrome/white. The vanity, tap, waste, accessories and screen upright are all matt black.

That wasn’t an accident. Black looks great where it stays dry and gets wiped down, but sat in a wet zone with the water we’ve got round here it starts picking up limescale within weeks. We’ve seen it on a full black scheme three months after we handed it over.

So chrome goes where the water is, and black goes everywhere else.

The shower is a white electric unit. It’s not the fanciest thing on the list but it was the right call. It suited the supply, it suited the budget, and it’s a solid reliable bit of kit. It also freed up money to spend where you actually see it. The marble effect feature wall, the recessed niche, the concealed cistern.

The WC is concealed next to a good sized vanity so the floor stays clear and the room feels bigger than it is.

That’s how we do it. Spec a room for how it looks in ten years, not how it looks in a photo on day one.

Here’s a shower room we were recently called to after the client noticed damp walls, cracked tiles and paint blowing on a bathroom only around three years old.

What was initially thought to be a leaking towel rail valve turned out to be much more once we opened things up.

We found issues with the shower tray installation, waste, wall preparation and tiling. The majority of the shower area had to be stripped back, the tray properly supported, walls reboarded and everything rebuilt correctly.

While we were there, we also sorted a stubborn toilet blockage that had been causing problems for a long time, replaced the bath panel, and installed a new basin, taps and shower screen.

Here’s the process and the finished result. 👌

One thing we always say: don’t cut corners on bathroom installation. What’s underneath the tiles is just as important as the finish you can see.
