I completed a job today in Chafford Hundred, replacing a faulty night latch. The old mechanism had worn out, the case was badly scratched and it was well past its best.

A worn latch like this is usually a simple, quick replacement. It doesn't mean the whole door or the other locks need changing.

Losing your house keys is more than an inconvenience. You simply do not know who might have them. The straightforward answer is usually a lock change, and most people are surprised by how quick and simple it is.

If you've just moved into a new home, changing the locks is a sensible step because you cannot know how many copies are out there. I'm available seven days a week, including Sundays.

✅ Usually a short visit: the door stays in place, with no mess or damage.

✅ Your existing door and handle stay exactly as they are. With a uPVC door, I can usually match the cylinder and keep the same handles.

✅ You only need to change the locks on doors the lost keys actually open, not every door in the house.

✅ I'll explain honestly what is and isn't needed, and I won't talk you into work you don't need.

A key snapping in the lock is stressful, but it happens more often than you might think. Usually, the key gives way rather than the lock, and it is a common call I deal with. There is no need to feel embarrassed.

For me, it is usually a quick job, but poking at it yourself is what turns it into a bigger one.

✅ Don't keep trying to turn or wiggle the broken key.

✅ Don't dig at it with a screwdriver, scissors or a hairgrip.

✅ Never use superglue or any kind of glue.

✅ Poking at it can push the piece further in and damage the mechanism.

✅ A key cut from a worn one, or one that has been bent straight, is often the one that snaps. Worth having a decent spare cut.

It is often removable and the lock is usually fine, though sometimes the lock needs replacing. Call me and I'll sort it properly. I'm available seven days a week, including Sundays.

Sunday afternoons are often when people are at home and notice the back door that needs a jiggle, the handle that's started to drop, or the key that only works if you turn it just so, and that suits me fine, because I'm working anyway.

Whether it's a small repair or something that can't wait, I'm available seven days a week, including Sundays and bank holidays. These little jobs are worth sorting while they're still small, and there's no such thing as too small a job to ask about. I'm happy to give honest advice over the phone or from a photo.

When you get in touch about a door or lock, a quick photo can help me understand the job before I set off.

People sometimes feel awkward about sending one, or worry it has to be perfect. It really doesn’t: a quick phone snap from a couple of feet back is plenty, as long as I can see the whole door and its edge.

✅ I can see whether it’s a uPVC or wooden door.

✅ I can identify the handle and lock type.

✅ I can check whether I’m likely to have the right part on the van.

✅ It saves time and helps me give honest advice over the phone.

✅ Often, the photo is enough to tell me whether it’s a straightforward fix or needs replacing.

That means I’m more likely to complete the job there and then, without needing to come back for a part.

My first job this morning was a jammed garden gate in Upminster. The customer had the key, but the lock would not turn.

The good news was that it did not need a new lock or a new gate. I opened it non-destructively, with no damage, then removed the lock, stripped it down and checked everything properly.

✅ Opened without damage

✅ Lock checked properly

✅ Lock refitted securely

✅ Gate and lock left intact

✅ Gate running smoothly again

If a lock will not turn, try not to force the key. When something is jammed, forcing it can cause more damage than good.

This week I attended a residential job where a window hinge had worn out and needed replacing.

The old hinge was removed and a replacement fitted, helping the window open, close and operate properly again. It’s a good example of why a window that has started catching, dropping or feeling awkward is worth getting looked at before the problem develops further.
