I thought this was a fun comparison for people. I’ve had such a wonderful response to my Lieutenant Titus, so I wanted to share my old converted Captain Titus from back in 2019 to demonstrate how practise over the years can hone your brushwork. I remember being so pleased with how he came out way-back-when - and I still get joy looking at him in my cabinet now, but for a different reason. He’s a benchmark for when I started to take painting seriously, and I wouldn’t be doing what I do for a living if I hadn’t made the mistakes I made on him first.

So, don’t be afraid to fail! Push yourself to try that technique, be proud of it when you finally nail it. And be kind to yourself when you look back on your old works. They helped get you to the standard you are today.

Cheers all!

(Last Lt Titus post I swear)

Some more closeups of all those details I pored over on Lt Titus. More so than usual, I wanted this model to be exciting from all angles, not just the golden one at the front. To assist me I split this model into even more sub-assemblies than usual: both shoulder pads, torso, pistol arm, holster, head and power pack. That way I could get into all those nooks and crannies to add even more crazy details - like lights on the forearms and back of the legs!

This was a ton of fun. Likely won’t be the level for every model, just those unique characters. Hope you like it!

More WIP on my take on Lieutenant Titus, complete with blu-tack pool noodle. Very nearly at the finish line now. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this project, I feel like I got my hobby-mojo back after quite the slump. All it took was having a baby! 😂

What do you think so far?

Painted up this unique helmet from Lieutenant Calsius for an upcoming project. It’s the first Lt helmet I’ve painted, so I had to figure out how wide I wanted the stripes to be. I’m pretty pleased with them. It’s been nice tackling these super detailed pieces - I can focus on a small area and spend what limited free time I have painting it fully, then putting it down for another night 😂

What do you folks think? I really do like the design of this helmet.

Seekers! I painted up these squiddy-adversaries for XCOM and had a lot of fun doing it.

The challenge was quick NMM, so I relied heavily on the airbrush to get those volumes down and smoothed out. I think the end result is convincing enough 😊

What do you folks think?

Introducing Baby Paints ™️

He’s already being put to work on basecoats. He’s not quite got the thinning down yet - and he sleeps a lot on the job, but he’ll get there.

Jokes aside he is the most amazing thing and we’re so lucky to have him. Being a Dad is wicked, yo. Who needs sleep anyway 😊

Some crispy scrollwork ready for text! I’ve been quietly chipping away at my Knight Valiant, hopefully it sees a game in 11th Edition 😂

Even though it’s a simple colour switch, I find painting this red such a refreshing change of pace from painting Ultramarines. I’m currently bouncing between this project and my Impulsor. Am I insane, or do you folks also find a change in colour refreshing?

Here’s some closeups and more angles of Dogmeat, who took home Silver for Large Scale at the Sir Coates Painting Masters.

This year has been hectic - we moved house, and imminently await the arrival of Baby France, so I didn’t decide to enter until very late. In fact, I only gave myself 20 days to get this bust done - which meant I spent most evenings till 1AM painting. I remember more than a few bleary-eyed nights where I finally had to concede and go to bed 😂 Lastly I was saved by the quickest of turnarounds by the legend - he is truly the go-to for plinths and busts.

Anyway, I’ll do another post detaining the steps I took, and more of a deep-dive into choice of bust and my action plan that helped me achieve my goal of a finished piece in such a short time. In the meantime, feast your eyes on this cracking sculpt by and let me know what you think below!

Another UKGE in the books! As always we had a lovely time, so thank you to everyone who I managed to catch and chat to, and apologies for those whom I missed - it was even crazier and busier than last year!

Dogmeat took home Silver in the Large Scale category of the Sir Coates Painting Masters competition. Busts are still a new and scary medium for me, so I’m chuffed he did so well. Congratulations to all the entrants, but particularly the winners for your gorgeous pieces. My favourite part of these competitions still is getting to see these works of art in the flesh. I did want to thank the judges & who juggled running their own stall and judging, and to who, even with a broken leg, stood at the ceremony to hand out the awards and offer his advice on entries. Absolute gentleman.

Special thanks to best-friend-and-squire for his ceaseless (sometimes incessant) hype-man duties and for joining me for another of these awesome adventures. Good food and many good pints were had. Glad to have you with me, brother.

I loved the playing the ME3 multiplayer, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fought an Atlas mech - so getting to paint one felt quite surreal. I wanted to get all that lovely chipping and weathering onto the off-white armour, and I knew that I had to make the cockpit look visually striking - even if I couldn’t paint a Cerberus Trooper huddled up in there! Instead, I tried to sell the illusion of depth, pulling darker yellows across the space to suggest a deep interior.

This model is HULKING! Credit to the immensely talented .debosdari for balancing the weight of this thing and getting it to fit onto the base!

What do you folks think of it? Eager to paint your own? It’s up for preorder from now!
