What would you happily keep?

It could be:

✓ A perfectly positioned sink or appliance
✓ Good-quality cabinetry
✓ A worktop you still love

It’s a useful exercise even if you ultimately decide on a completely new kitchen.

What does a kitchen designer actually do?

It’s easy to think kitchen design is mainly about choosing cabinets, colours and worktops. Those are certainly part of it, but there’s a lot happening before you get anywhere near those decisions.

A designer is considering how you move around the room, where you need storage, how doors and appliances open, where you need worktop space, how the different elements work together and how to make the best use of the space you have.

And sometimes, they’ll spot possibilities you simply hadn’t considered.

If you’re thinking about changing your kitchen, try this for a week:

Every time your kitchen annoys you, make a note of why.

The bin is too far from the prep area.
There’s nowhere to put the air fryer away.
Someone opens the dishwasher and blocks the walkway.
The cupboard is technically huge, but you can’t reach half of it.
Everyone congregates exactly where you’re trying to cook.

These little everyday frustrations are incredibly useful when you start planning a kitchen.

You don’t need to know which layout you want or how many drawers you need. Start by noticing what isn’t working.

The solutions can come later.

Not every kitchen renovation needs to start from scratch.

For this kitchen, the existing layout worked. What it needed was an upgrade and some clever thinking about the space that wasn’t being used.

We added new storage solutions, including drawer units that made previously inaccessible corners useful again. New cupboard doors and handles then gave the kitchen a fresh new look without changing the overall design.

It’s a great example of why we start by looking at what a kitchen actually needs, rather than assuming everything has to go.

A utility room often goes hand in hand with a new kitchen design. After all, there's plenty of overlap between the two, from laundry and storage to all those practical things you'd rather keep away from the main kitchen.

But could that space work even harder?

Kitchen design has a language all of its own. But behind some of the designer-y sounding terms are actually really simple ideas.

Here are three you might come across:

Negative space
The deliberately empty areas in a design. In a kitchen, that might mean leaving some worktop clear or resisting the temptation to fill every wall with cabinetry. Empty space can help a kitchen feel calmer and less crowded.

Focal point
The part of the kitchen your eye is naturally drawn to first. It could be an island, a statement splashback, a beautiful range cooker or even a view through the windows.

Sightline
Quite simply, what you can see from a particular position. When planning a kitchen, that could mean considering what you see as you enter the room, the view from the island, or whether the practical areas of the kitchen are immediately visible from an adjoining living space.

Nothing particularly complicated once you know what they mean!
