That's 179 days until the snowdrops start peeking through and spring arrives. It sounds like a long time but the gardens that look incredible in March are the ones that got a little love through autumn and winter.
Little and often is the key. You don't have to do it all at once.
Here's what's worth doing before winter really sets in...
🌟Mulch everything
A good thick layer of mulch around your plants, borders and beds does three things. It insulates the roots from frost, locks in moisture and suppresses weeds. One of the best things you can do for your garden before the cold arrives. Bark, compost or well rotted manure all work brilliantly.
✂️ Cut back and tidy up
Spent perennials, dead stems and tatty growth can all come back now. Tidy borders not only look better through winter, they're also healthier come spring.
🍂 Stay on top of leaves
A carpet of wet leaves left on the lawn kills the grass underneath and creates the perfect home for slugs and pests. Keep on top of them little and often rather than leaving it for one big miserable session. 😄
🌱 Protect vulnerable plants
Anything tender needs some help before the first frost. Fleece, mulch or moving pots into a sheltered spot can make the difference between a plant that survives and one that doesn't.
🌱 Empty and store your pots
Waterlogged pots that freeze and crack are no fun in spring. Empty, clean and store anything you're not using through winter.
Do the little jobs now and come March, when everything starts waking up again, your garden will be ready to go. 🌿
