A recognised certificate may be essential—but it is rarely the only thing an employer needs before someone can be deployed.

“Site-ready” can mean having the complete evidence and practical preparation required for the specific role, including:

• The correct, current certification for the work
• Verified identification and accurate training records
• Medical fitness where the role or standard requires it
• A properly maintained logbook where applicable
• Practical competence appropriate to the level held
• Site, client and project-specific requirements
• An understanding of the limits of your own competence

Requirements differ between rope access, wind, telecoms and industrial projects. Before investing in training, start with the role you are targeting and work backwards from the actual employer or site requirements.

Been off the ropes for six months or more?

IRATA requires technicians who have not been engaged in rope access work for 180 days or longer to attend refresher training.

That is not the same as recertification. It is a practical return-to-work step designed to refresh core techniques before you resume rope access duties.

What does your first week of IRATA Level 1 training actually feel like?

Many new trainees expect the height to be the biggest adjustment. Often, the first challenge is simply becoming familiar with the equipment: understanding what each device does, how the system fits together and which action needs to happen next.

Nobody is expected to arrive already knowing the movements. Across five full training days, techniques are introduced in stages through instructor demonstration, supported practice and repetition. That gives trainees time to ask questions, make corrections and become more comfortable operating on the ropes.

The aim is not to move quickly or rely on strength. It is to develop an organised approach: check the equipment, follow the correct sequence, maintain control and repeat the movement consistently.

As the week progresses, actions that initially feel unfamiliar begin to connect. Confidence grows because the trainee understands the system—not because the risks are treated casually.

Limited spaces remain on our next IRATA rope access course in Belfast.

Training runs from Monday 2 November, with the independent assessment on Saturday 7 November 2026.

Level 1 is for new entrants. Levels 2 and 3 are for eligible technicians progressing their certification. Every course includes five full days of practical training before assessment.

The first confined-space control is not a harness, gas monitor or rescue tripod.

It is asking whether entry can be avoided.

The Confined Spaces Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1999 require work to be carried out without entering a confined space where reasonably practicable. If entry cannot be avoided, the work needs a safe system and suitable emergency arrangements.

Our half-day awareness course helps operatives, supervisors and duty holders recognise the boundary between routine work and a confined-space task that needs specialist planning.

“Clean” steel is not necessarily ready to coat.

A coating specification can require more than visible cleanliness. Surface profile, soluble contamination and climatic conditions may all need to be checked before application begins.

If those controls are missed, the problem can be built into the coating system before the first coat has cured.

An offshore inspection may identify the defect—but it does not complete the maintenance task.

The next decisions determine whether that information becomes a safe, timely intervention: how the work area will be reached, whether the conditions suit the proposed method, what repair system is required and how the completed work will be verified.

Our newest blog looks at that full maintenance chain across offshore wind assets. It considers:

• how rope access can support targeted inspection and repair
• the role of drone data in locating defects
• blade erosion, composite repair and protective coatings
• the effect of weather windows on access and curing conditions
• how GWO and IRATA competence support different parts of the work

The important point is that inspection, access and repair should not be treated as disconnected activities. The strongest maintenance strategy links the defect data to a defined scope, competent people, suitable access and an auditable close-out.
