Myth Busting: Can You Always Smell a Gas Leak?

MYTH: “If there’s a gas leak, I’ll will be able to smell it.”

FALSE. While natural gas is odorised to smell bad you cannot always be able to smell a gas leak. Leaks can be small, slow, or in areas where the smell doesn’t reach you.

⚠️ Gas leaks are serious – even a tiny leak can be dangerous. Signs of a potential leak include:

• Hissing or whistling sounds near gas pipes or appliances
• Smell of gas
• A sudden increase in gas consumption
• Feeling dizzy or experiencing headaches

If you suspect a gas leak, act immediately:

1. Leave the area immediately.
2. Avoid using electrical switches, phones, or flames.
3. Open windows and doors
4. Contact Gas Emergency Service NI at 0800 002 001 to report the leak safely.

Remember: Always prioritise safety. Never attempt to find or fix a gas leak yourself.
