Milestone achieved! We have just planted our 2,500,000 tree!

The planting season 2026-27 has started (we use cell grown transplants initially) and this has enabled us to crack this threshold. A wonderful day to do it, overlooking Belfast with a super team of planters.

The start of the Christmas run up was today. The Irish Championships (held north of the border for the first time ever) was a chance to see the quality of the trees Ireland can produce. With a such a strong field we were delighted to come away with a rosette for 2nd place in the potted tree category.

It’s lovely to see the Forest Service filming on one of the sites we planted a couple of years ago.

The grant paid to landowners has been increased significantly for this years scheme. For marginal ground the landowners premium payment goes from £324 to £1,900. This is on top of %100 establishments costs.

Given commercial forestry can be worth £10,000 tax free per acre after 25-30 years it becomes a financially viable alternative to other land uses.

Our 10 year trial with this exciting new species (Meyer spruce) now starting to produce significant numbers of beautiful trees that will be ready for next Christmas. This species has impressive needle retention, a beautiful blue colour and the shape and smell of the traditional Norway spruce.

Occasionally some of our fir trees will produce a profusion of cones. Beautiful now, but a bit of a pain come Christmas if not removed by hand at this time of the year (or shaken by machine after they have been harvested). Fir cones disintegrate into hundreds of winged seeds, unlike pine and spruce cones that remain intact.
