Planning how your home will be heated? 🏡

James from WRB is talking through another side of renewable energy that more homeowners are beginning to consider: air source heat pumps.

We have been designing and installing solar systems for over 15 years, and we are now bringing that same design-led approach to renewable heating.

If you are in the early stages of planning a new build, it is a great time to think about how the home will be heated before everything else is decided. Our team can help you look at the property, its expected heat demand and the different options available, then design a system around what the home will actually need.

And it is not only for new builds. If you currently rely on oil or gas and are considering an upgrade, an air source heat pump gives you another option. When correctly specified and designed for the property, these systems can operate at efficiencies above 400%, producing significantly more heat energy than the electrical energy they consume.

As with solar, getting the design right is the important bit. We look at the home first, calculate what it needs and then recommend a system accordingly.

Whether you are planning from scratch or thinking about modernising an existing home, get in touch with WRB Group and have a chat with the team about what could work for you.

Before we recommend a heat pump, we need to know what your home actually needs ♨️

James, our heat pump designer here at WRB, is talking through one of the most important first steps in the process: the heat loss calculation.

Before a heat pump is selected, we need to understand how much heat the property is actually losing. That means gathering information such as room measurements, construction materials, U-values, SAP reports and existing plans, then feeding that into specialist software to produce a full heat loss report.

From there, we can calculate the overall heat loss of the property and use that information to determine the correct size of heat pump for the home. The report can also help compare the projected performance against other heating sources such as gas, oil and biomass, giving the homeowner a much clearer picture before making any decisions.

It is another reason we do not believe in one size fits all heating systems. The property comes first, the calculations come next, and then we design the system around what the home genuinely needs.

If you are exploring whether an air source heat pump could work for your property, get in touch with WRB Group to arrange an initial consultation.

One property, two very different energy demands ☀️

This is not just a family home. It is also a place of business.

That means the energy demand is higher than you would expect from a typical household, so the system had to be designed around how the property is actually used.

For this installation, we designed a setup with 6.9 kW of solar panels and 30 kWh of battery storage.

During daylight hours, the panels generate electricity for the property to use. Any surplus can be stored in the batteries and kept for later, helping cover more of the evening demand when the sun has gone down.

It is a good example of why solar should never be treated as one size fits all.

A family home, a home-based business, a commercial site or a property with unusually high energy use will all need something different.

At WRB Group, we look at the property, the usage and the goals first, then design the system around that.

A business using far less from the grid ☀️

Leah caught up with Rhys from Just Dog to hear what pushed him towards solar and, more importantly, what difference it has made since the system went live.

For Rhys, rising electricity costs were already becoming harder to ignore. Then came another factor: starting his own business and adding even more demand to the property.

That made solar and battery storage a practical investment rather than something to think about further down the line.

Since installation, Rhys says the difference has been significant. With the solar system generating during the day and a larger amount of battery storage available, the business can keep far more of its energy needs covered without relying on the grid.

As Rhys explains in the video, their daily grid import has dropped from upwards of 25 kWh to around 5 kWh.

And the experience with WRB?

“I found the lads very professional. They came out, did their job very quickly and got all the wires tied up very nicely. I couldn’t be happier. The setup looks beautiful to me.”

A big thank you to Rhys for taking the time to share his experience.

For businesses with consistent daytime energy use, solar and battery storage can be a really effective way to reduce grid reliance and bring more control to ongoing electricity costs.

If you’re thinking about solar for your business, get in touch with WRB Group and we’ll talk through what could work for your site.

Every panel has a reason to be there ☀️

This recent WRB installation is now live, and the finished roof tells only part of the story.

Before anything was fitted, our team surveyed the property properly. We looked at the roof orientation, potential shading and how the homeowner actually uses electricity throughout the day.

Rather than simply filling every available space with panels, the system was designed to make the best use of the roof and generate effectively throughout the year, while keeping the finished installation clean and balanced.

Now that everything is up and running, the homeowner can also monitor generation and energy use in real time from their phone, giving them a clear picture of what the system is doing day to day.

It is a good example of why solar design is about much more than asking how many panels will fit on a roof.

The right placement, the right system size and an understanding of how the property uses energy all matter.

“How many solar panels do I need?” ☀️
It is one of the first questions people ask when they start looking into solar, but it is not always the best place to begin.

A more useful question is: when does your home use the most electricity?

If the house is empty for most of the day and energy use climbs in the evening, simply adding more panels will not necessarily create greater savings.

The size of the system matters, but so does your daily routine, whether battery storage is included, how much electricity you can use as it is generated and what happens to any surplus power sent back to the grid.

Battery storage, for example, can hold onto more of the electricity generated during the day so it is available later, when everyone is home and demand is higher.

That is why the best solar systems are not designed around roof space alone. They are designed around the people living beneath it.

At WRB Group, we look at your property, your electricity usage and your goals before recommending a system, so you are not simply paying for the highest number of panels that will fit.

Summer at home can use a lot of energy ☀️

With the school holidays in full swing, many homes are busier from morning until night.

Washing machines running, devices charging, kettles boiling, televisions on, and everyone in and out of the shower between swims, outings and whatever else the day has in store.

It all adds up, and so can the electricity bill.

The good thing about solar is that much of this extra activity happens during the daytime, when your panels are producing electricity. That means your home can use more of its own power as it is generated, rather than buying everything from the grid.

Battery storage can keep surplus electricity for later in the evening, while a solar diverter can send available excess energy to your immersion heater, helping provide hot water where the system and property are suitable.

For busy families, it is a smarter way to make use of the daylight landing on the roof and take more control over household energy costs throughout the year.

At WRB Group, we design each system around the home, the people living in it and how energy is actually used.

If the summer holidays have your meter working overtime, get in touch and we’ll show you what solar could do for your family home.

Solar that works around your business ☀️

For many businesses, energy use is not a small background cost anymore. It affects overheads, margins, planning and how confidently you can look ahead.

That is why commercial solar is becoming a serious consideration for offices, warehouses, retail spaces, workshops and larger business sites.

A well designed solar system can help your business generate more of its own electricity during working hours, reduce reliance on the grid and make better use of unused roof space.

It also supports the bigger picture. Lower running costs, improved energy efficiency and a clear step towards more sustainable operations.

At WRB Group, we do not treat commercial solar as a one size fits all job. We look at your site, your usage, your operating hours and your goals before designing a system that makes sense for the way your business actually runs.

If your business is ready to explore solar, our team would be happy to talk through what could work for your premises.

SOLAR STILL WORKS IN OUR WEATHER ☔

One of the biggest myths we hear is that solar only works on bright, sunny days.

It doesn’t.

It is raining in Ballyclare, and the panels are still generating electricity.

Solar panels work from daylight, not just direct sunshine, which is exactly why they make sense for homes and businesses across Northern Ireland. Our weather changes quickly, so systems need to be designed for real conditions, including rain, wind and cloudy days.

If solar only worked in perfect sunshine, we would all be in bother around here.

At WRB Group, we design solar systems around your property, your usage and the conditions your system will actually be working in.

If you are thinking about solar, get in touch and we’ll talk you through what could work for your home or business.
