Finding the right contractor for your home or business isn't always easy. Before expanding into our own business, we used to work directly for large, national companies, so we know firsthand how they operate—from their workflows to their sales tactics.
While we pride ourselves on being fully qualified, fully insured, and excellent at what we do, we’re also realistic: we might not be the right match for every single project or client, and that is completely okay!
However, taking a few minutes to research a contractor's credibility before signing a contract can save you thousands of pounds and months of stress.
Here are a few essential things to look out for:
✅Look closely at online reviews. Be cautious if a company has dozens of brand-new positive reviews posted over a short timeframe—especially if they come from vague or fictional-looking names with no (genuine) project photos. Many dishonest contractors buy fake positive feedback while attempting to hide or remove negative reviews detailing poor workmanship.
✅Check independent forums and local press. When things go wrong, unhappy customers often seek advice or share warning stories on community forums or local news outlets. A great place to check is the MoneySavingExpert.com forum, where users frequently share honest experiences, advice, and warnings about contractors and trades.
⚠️Don't assume a higher price equals safety or honesty.
We quoted a customer for a project a while ago, but they chose a competitor whose price was thousands of pounds higher, due to admittedly thinking that the competition must bring something better to the table. After demanding and taking over 75% of the total cost upfront with almost no progress made, the company completely cut off communication, ignoring every phone call, email, and letter.
To make matters worse, the customer was left burdened with unpaid scaffolding bills and had to pay all over again to get the actual work finished.
We give out lots of free quotes, and when potential customers choose our competition, that’s completely fine—we all have a place here! What isn't okay is seeing people suffer through complications that could have been easily avoided with a little research. Above all, we shouldn't forget to treat each other with basic humanity.
Protecting yourself comes down to simple research: check their history, look for real photos of completed work, and be extremely cautious of large upfront payment demands. A little extra digging early on can make all the difference.
