A bigger shower is planned at the drain, not chosen in the showroom.

More homeowners are looking to increase the size of their main shower, but the part that often gets overlooked is what has to happen before the first tile goes down. The waste position, floor build-up and falls, the choice between a tray and a level base, and exactly where the tanking finishes all need to be considered together.

If an existing drain can’t be moved, I’ll plan around its position and explain the options honestly. Depending on the layout and floor construction, that might mean adjusting the shower size or shape, choosing a suitable tray, or finding a practical way to form the falls to the existing waste. Forcing a design that doesn’t drain properly isn’t a good solution.

Getting these details right at the start helps protect the installation and gives the finished shower the look and function the homeowner wants. The tiles are the visible finish; the preparation underneath is what makes it work.

Before you book a tiler, it’s worth asking:

How will the walls or floor be prepared?
Will wet areas be properly waterproofed or tanked?
Which adhesive and grout will be used?
Are the materials supplied?
Exactly what is included in the quote?

If you live in a 1930s semi or a Victorian terrace around Bedfordshire, there’s a good chance very little is perfectly square, plumb or level, and that’s completely normal for an older house.

Before I start tiling, I check the walls and floors carefully. I’m looking for hollows, high spots, movement and changes in level, because tiling straight onto an uneven surface can create problems with alignment, lippage and finished appearance.

Where needed, I’ll pack out low areas or use suitable boards to create a flat, sound surface before the tiles go on. This is especially important with large-format tiles and plain walls, as they show up every deviation in the background. Even a small change in the wall can become very noticeable once the tile is fixed.

This is also why preparation can make up a significant part of a tiling quote. The finished quality doesn’t just come from cutting and fixing the tiles. A large part of it comes from getting the surface right first.

After more than 17 years in the trade, I know that taking the time to prepare properly gives the best chance of a clean, level and durable finish, and helps avoid problems further down the line.

A recessed shower niche is not simply a hole cut into the wall once the tiling is underway. It has to be planned before the first tile goes on.

On this blue floral patterned shower enclosure, the niche was set out to suit the tile layout, formed square and true, and positioned at a practical height so everything is within easy reach without bottles ending up on the shower floor.

It also needs to be tanked as part of the shower enclosure, with the waterproofing carefully continued into the niche so the protection remains intact. The dimensions and position are then checked against the tile joints, allowing the lines to continue neatly through the back, sides and surrounding walls.

Once tiled, the cleanly finished edges make the niche look like it belongs naturally within the pattern, rather than appearing as an afterthought. The black shower fittings complement the blue botanical design and complete the enclosure with a smart, cohesive finish.

Electric underfloor heat (UFH) mats have always been a popular choice in bathroom, kitchen & ground floor renovations, but there is more to it than just fitting it down.

A few things to consider are whether it’s being laid onto a screed base or floating floor. Either will benefit from having insulation boards fitted prior to laying the underfloor heating especially a screed base, as without the insulation boards, the heat from the UFH mat could escape into screed. The insulation boards help to reduce this and the heat will only surface upwards into the room where you want it making more efficient and cost effective.

A second consideration is where the heat mat is positioned as you won’t want it going under any sanitary ware such as the toilet, sink or bath in a bathroom or under any units or appliances in a kitchen etc. When we fit UFH mats we will always plan with our clients where the heat mat will be laid prior to fitting.

Lastly is the size of heat mat you want. We will measure where it’s got to go and usually take off 10% as you don’t need the UFH mat going right up to any skirting boards etc and you certainly don’t want to order to much as it strictly can’t be cut down to size. We will also need to know where the power source of the heat mat is positioned as this will be our starting point.

Once the heat mat is fitted we will level over the heat mat with a good depth of levelling screed to ensure the UFH is fully covered and protected when it comes to tiling. Another advantage of putting a decent depth of levelling screed over is that in the future you need to remove a tile for any reason you are less likely to damage the heat mat.

All through this process we will use an OHMs metre to measure the resistance of the heat mat from taking it out of the box to when the tiling is complete.

(Please note that we are not qualified to connect the UFH mat up to the mains but can recommend qualified electricians whom can do this).

There’s something timeless about a parquet floor, and this light oak wood-effect porcelain gives that same character without the upkeep of real timber.

This completed floor was laid in a herringbone pattern, with the setting out carefully planned so the lines stayed consistent through the main living space and the cuts around the perimeter were kept balanced. That preparation makes a big difference to the finished look.

Wood-effect porcelain is a practical choice for hallways, kitchens and open-plan living spaces, especially where moisture, everyday wear and regular maintenance could make real timber less suitable.
