🏙️ On-site in Birmingham: Rooftop ductwork survey

A recent site visit to assess rooftop ductwork, looking at the condition, layout and overall installation.

Site surveys are an important part of understanding existing building services, identifying potential issues and helping inform the next steps for maintenance, upgrades or refurbishment.

It’s all about getting a clear picture on site to support informed decisions and keep building services performing as they should.

We're delighted to welcome our new Aircon & Ventilation Supervisor, Matt Mackenzie, to the team.

With a strong background and wealth of experience in air conditioning, Matt has joined us to oversee and support our AC team, working closely with our engineers whenever technical support is required.

His role will also see him working alongside our management team on technical queries, attending site visits, and supporting our office team with any AC-related issues or questions that arise.

We're particularly looking forward to the fresh perspective and industry knowledge he brings to the business. His experience will play an important part in helping us continue to improve our AC practices, strengthen our technical support, and maintain the high standards we strive for across our projects.

We're excited to see the positive impact Matt will make and look forward to the achievements ahead.

When a Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE) fails, replacing it is only half the job. 🔧

A client's PHE had failed repeatedly. This time, the site was left without hot water, so we attended straight away, assessed the system and quoted for temporary plant while still dealing with the incident.

The supplier's standard delivery was 48 hours, which would have resulted in an unacceptable period without hot water for residents. So, at approximately 4pm we sourced a local transport company in Stoke-on-Trent to collect the equipment and drive it to Newcastle upon Tyne that same evening. Our engineers installed and commissioned it overnight.

Hot water was restored within 12 hours of the original failure.

That bought us the time to remove the failed unit and find out why it kept happening. The root cause was poor system water quality. Water treatment wasn't within our contracted scope, but rather than simply replacing the failed unit and waiting for the issue to happen again, we focused on resolving the underlying cause.

✅ Failed PHE replaced
✅ Side-stream filtration installed to tackle the problem at its source
✅ Wider heating network and connected HIUs better protected
✅ Improved reliability and fewer future maintenance issues

Fast response matters when critical services fail. So does asking why it failed in the first place.

Not every electrical fault is visible. Some give off a warning sign in the form of heat. 🌡️⚡

Thermal imaging is a valuable part of preventative maintenance, helping us identify abnormal heat patterns in electrical equipment before they develop into more serious issues.

During a thermal imaging survey, our electricians look for signs such as:

🔎 Overheating connections
⚡ Uneven or excessive loading
🔧 Loose or deteriorating components
🌡️ Abnormal temperature patterns
🚨 Potential faults that may otherwise go unnoticed

The benefit? Early identification.

By spotting potential problems before they result in equipment failure, we can plan remedial works, reduce unexpected downtime and help keep critical electrical systems operating safely and reliably.

The best time to find an electrical problem is before it becomes a failure.

We’re pleased to welcome Tim Evans, our new Commercial Facilities Maintenance Engineer, who will be based across two sites in Manchester.

Working alongside our wider facilities team, Tim will be supporting a range of technical duties, planned and reactive maintenance, and on-site engineering jobs, helping to keep both facilities operating safely, efficiently and effectively.

We’re delighted to have Tim on board and look forward to seeing the contribution he’ll make across both sites.
