⏪ Throwback To Where It All Began! ⏪

Taking it back to the late 1940s with this fantastic photograph of what is now Pennys Group’s Head Office in Ston Easton! 📸

Dating back to approximately 1945–1950, the building was once a fertiliser works owned by Squire Nash.

It was here that our founder Mr Roger Maxwell Penny began his journey, laying the foundations for the family-run business we know today.

Fast forward more than 65 years, and this very site remains our Head Office. While the business has grown and evolved beyond recognition, our roots remain firmly planted in Ston Easton.

From humble beginnings to the Pennys Group of today, it’s incredible to look back at the history behind a place that continues to be such an important part of our story. 💛🤎

Same location. Generations of history. Still keeping the show on the road!

Wishing Colin a very Happy 80th Birthday! Thank you for your loyalty and hard work for all of these years 🎉👏🍾

🚨OUR COUNTRY DESERVES BETTER THAN THIS. 🚨

Fly-tipping is a serious issue affecting communities right across the UK, and it’s one that simply cannot be ignored.

From rural country lanes and beautiful countryside to busy towns and cities, illegally dumped waste has become an all-too-familiar sight.

And the scale of the problem is shocking.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of fly-tipping incidents are recorded across the country, with enormous amounts of time, money and resources spent dealing with waste that should never have been dumped in the first place.

This isn’t just a problem for local councils or those working in the waste industry. It’s a national issue that affects us all.

At Pennys Group, we’ve been involved in waste management for decades, and we understand the importance of ensuring waste is handled, transported and disposed of responsibly.

But tackling fly-tipping takes more than just the waste industry. It requires greater awareness, accountability and a collective effort to protect the places we live and work.

The frustrating part? So much of this is entirely preventable.

As a country, we need to do better. Our countryside, communities and future generations deserve better.

♻️ DO YOUR BIT – CHECK BEFORE YOU HAND OVER YOUR WASTE!

Before paying someone to take your waste away, make sure they’re authorised to do so. You can check whether a waste carrier is registered using the Environment Agency’s public register:

🔎 Check a Waste Carrier:
https://environment.data.gov.uk/public-register/view/search-waste-carriers-brokers

Checking their registration is a simple step towards ensuring your waste is handled responsibly. Remember to check that the registration matches the person or business collecting your waste.

♻️ Recycle Week 2026 ♻️

Ok you guessed it, these are AI images – but hopefully it gives you an idea of what we are up to behind the scenes! 😂

The photos might not be the real Green Ore, but they’ve been created to show the overall processes that take place at our Green Ore Recycling Centre and give you a look at what happens to waste once it reaches us.

And Green Ore isn’t working alone! ♻️

Pennys also operates a network of waste transfer stations, including Westbury (Wiltshire) and Henstridge (Somerset), helping us manage waste across the region and recover as much material as possible.

So, this Recycle Week, have a swipe through and see what happens after your waste leaves you. 👉

And if seeing all this has reminded you that your business needs assistance with total waste management or that your garage, garden or building site could do with a clear-out… we can help with that too! 👀

🌟 Congratulations Billy! 🌟

We were delighted to see that Billy has been recognised at Yeovil College’s Shining Stars 2026 Awards, winning both the Bricklaying Award and the Overall Winner Award! 👏

Billy spent time with us at Pennys earlier this year as part of his work placement, working alongside our team and gaining hands-on experience.

During his time with us, Billy showed a great work ethic, was always punctual and paid close attention to the instructions given to him. He wasn’t afraid to ask questions, showed a real willingness to learn and took a genuine interest in the work he was involved with.

It’s fantastic to see him receiving this recognition and continuing to do so well.

A huge congratulations from everyone at Pennys, Billy – very well deserved! 👏🏆

This isn’t simply about waste compliance. It’s about keeping people safe.

Every day, Pennys Group collects skips from our customers and receives waste loads across our transfer stations. From the moment that waste enters one of our skips or arrives at one of our sites, it will be moved, tipped, sorted and processed using heavy plant and machinery.

If a Lithium-ion battery is hidden amongst that waste, our drivers, weighbridge staff and site operatives may have no way of knowing it is there.

A battery that looks small and harmless can be crushed, punctured or damaged during collection, compaction, tipping or processing. If that happens, it can ignite without warning and cause a rapidly developing fire - putting our employees, customers, emergency services, equipment, facilities and the surrounding environment at risk.

By the time a hidden battery reaches our weighbridge or processing plant, it may already be too late to prevent the danger.

That is why prevention has to start before the waste is put into one of our skips or sent to one of our sites.

We are asking all Pennys Group customers to help us by making you understand the risks and never place Lithium-ion batteries or battery-powered items into general waste or skips. Batteries should be removed and disposed of through an appropriate battery recycling route.

Please take a few minutes to read the information outlined in our flyer and share it with anyone responsible for disposing of waste on your sites.

One battery in the wrong place is all it takes. By working together, we can protect our people, our sites and our communities.

Corston Block - Bath Spa University 🎓

Our team recently completed the demolition of the Corston Block at Bath Spa University’s Newton Park Campus, as part of the wider redevelopment and landscape restoration of the site.

Using our 20-tonne excavator, the team carried out the demolition and clearance of the existing building. But this project involved much more than simply bringing a building down.

🌳 With Newton Park surrounded by important habitats and wildlife, careful environmental management was required throughout the works. Tree protection measures were implemented, alongside controls to protect species including Great Crested Newts, bats, nesting birds and badgers.

The removal of the Corston Block will allow the area to form part of the wider landscape restoration, helping to reopen the historic landscape and views across Newton Park.

📸 We might not have captured the final shot, but these before and during photos give a pretty good idea of the transformation!

Firstly, we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who took the time to attend the funeral of Roger Penny last week.

We were overwhelmed by the turnout, both in person and online.

It means the world to us that so many people came together to celebrate the life of a man who meant so much to so many. Hearing the stories of how people knew Roger, the memories they shared and the impact he had on so many lives has been incredibly touching.

Secondly, during the wake the bar was raising money and thanks to everyone's generosity, we managed to raise an incredible £4248.

This money will be used to support local charities and community projects in Roger's memory – a true man of the Mendips, who always wanted to give back and support the local community wherever he could.

Thirdly, a massive thank you to all of the incredible local businesses who helped us make Roger's funeral and wake possible:

Rebecca's Flower Shop – Family Flowers
Floral_Flo – Pennys Tribute Flowers
JG Marquees – Marquee Hire
The Litton – Bar & Food Service
Live Streaming - PA System - Large Screens – Streaming Service & Internet
Tom Booth Drones – Drone Footage
Bryan G. Bishop Independent Funeral Directors - Funeral Directors
The Horseless Bar - Bar Hire
Chew Valley Hire – Toilet Hire (https://www.mobiletoilets.co.uk/)
Chew Valley Generators - Generator hire (https://www.chewvalleygenerators.co.uk/)
Jeremy Weare Ltd - Landscaping (https://www.jeremyweareltd.co.uk/)

And lastly, to the Pennys team.
Without your help, none of this would have been possible. So many of you gave up your time and pulled together to help us give Roger a send-off that he would have been proud of.
From helping with the organisation and setting up, coordinating the day, driving vehicles, making signs and taking photos, to those who stayed behind in the offices and across the business to keep Pennys going – every contribution mattered.
We are incredibly grateful to each and every one of you. It was a true team effort and a reflection of the family spirit that Roger built Pennys around – a spirit that we will continue to carry forward and keep alive.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, to everyone who played a part in making Roger's send-off so special.

Cath and Family❤️

And, in the famous words of Mr Roger Maxwell Penny...
“Keep the show on the road.”
