This week we had the opportunity to revisit a completed project and catch up with the homeowners.

Seeing a project once it has settled into everyday life is always rewarding. You get to understand what works well, how the spaces are being used and whether the original design ambitions have been achieved.

One comment stood out.

The client told us they particularly valued the advice we provided around project budgets and construction costs at the outset of the project. Understanding where to invest, what represented good value and how to align the design with their budget gave them the confidence to move forward.

As architects, we often talk about design, planning and construction.

But sometimes the most valuable thing we can provide is clarity.

Helping clients make informed decisions from the beginning often leads to better outcomes and fewer surprises later on.

Many home improvement projects begin with a simple brief:

"I need more space."

But bigger doesn't always mean better.

Some of the most successful projects we've worked on haven't focused on maximising square metres. Instead, they've focused on improving natural light, creating better flow between rooms, strengthening the connection to the garden, and making everyday life easier.

Good house design is about how a home feels, not just how much space it contains.

Bank holiday weekend ready ☀️😎

Thoughtful design is not just about how a space looks, but how it feels to live in.

Large glazed openings, carefully considered shading and strong connections to the garden can completely change how a home performs during warmer weather.

Spaces that feel bright, calm and comfortable all year round are often the result of lots of small design decisions working together.

A week spent preparing for planning committee is a reminder that good planning outcomes rarely happen overnight.

This rural workspace scheme in Wiltshire involved months of collaboration, coordination and detailed design work before reaching committee:

- Planning strategy
- Highways input
- Ecology and landscape design
- Drainage coordination
- Arboricultural constraints
- Detailed architectural design

Last week, I attended planning committee and delivered a short three minute speech in support of the application, helping explain the site, the design response and the thinking behind the proposal.

Planning committee presentations are ultimately about clarity. Helping councillors understand the constraints, opportunities and wider context behind a scheme.

Every planning application tells a story, and good design is often about balancing opportunity, technical constraints and landscape sensitivity to create something thoughtful and deliverable.

And the best thing about it all, was the scheme was approved!!

A carefully considered rear extension in Bath, designed to transform a compact family home and create a better connection to the garden.

Rather than extending to the side and retaining the conservatory, the design focused on a larger rear addition to create a more generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living space.

Brimstone timber cladding was used to unify old and new elements, helping the extension sit comfortably alongside the existing house while introducing a contemporary character.

Carefully positioned glazing, rooflights and a window seat bring natural light deep into the plan, improving the quality of the internal spaces throughout the day.

The project also introduced new utility and shower spaces to better support modern family life.

A great example of how thoughtful design can completely reshape the way a home feels and functions.

Materials play a huge role in how a project is experienced.

They influence warmth, texture, light, atmosphere and how new spaces sit alongside existing buildings.

The right material palette can help an extension feel calm and grounded, or create contrast and definition where needed. It is often the small details and junctions that have the biggest impact.

We always consider materials early in the design process, not simply as a finishing touch, but as a key part of how a building will feel and perform over time.

Thoughtful material choices help create spaces that age well and feel connected to their setting.

Lyncombe Vale, Bath

A full house retrofit and extension to transform a neglected property into a modern, energy-efficient family home.

Working across four split levels, the design unlocks the potential of the existing structure while improving flow, light and connection to the garden.

A new lower ground extension creates a generous living space, opening onto a terrace with long views. A projecting window seat frames one of the best aspects of the site, bringing light deep into the plan.

Elsewhere, the house was reconfigured to introduce new bedrooms and en-suite spaces, with the attic converted into a private top floor suite.

Alongside the spatial changes, the project focused on performance:

high levels of insulation
triple glazing throughout
air source heating
whole house ventilation
and photovoltaic panels

The result is a comfortable, low energy home designed for long term living.

A thoughtful transformation that shows what can be achieved with a considered retrofit approach.

West Forest Farm, Frome

Projects do not necessarily have to be huge to make a significant impact.

This sunroom addition makes up one element of a broader renovation of an existing farmhouse where the intention was to add a light-filled room that would blend seamlessly with the existing structure.

The brief included the creation of ample glass without the sacrifice of comfort through the seasons.

In order to deliver this, attention was paid to
excellent thermal insulation
the use of triple glazing
and detailing to reduce energy loss.

The design was developed with simplicity at its core, ensuring that it added to the beauty of the original building rather than competed with it.

A successful solution, adding light and usability to the living space of the house.

Architectural designs are usually thought of as intricate sketches or actual buildings themselves when people consider them.

The truth is that architectural projects usually begin in much less complicated fashion.

Sketching allows one to explore multiple possibilities while figuring out how things will turn out in practice before making any final choices.

The majority of crucial decisions concerning a particular project are made precisely during this process, including the arrangement of spaces, location of sources of lighting, and positioning of the structure.

It’s all about the process of thinking rather than creating an impeccable design.

Getting these aspects right makes subsequent ones much easier.
