One of the things we love most about working here is this - the layers of stone, rooftops and church towers climbing up the hillside. It is a city shaped by its architecture, and you feel that everywhere you look.

This is home for us at David Brain Partnership, and it is a privilege to work within a city (just next to the abbey) with this much history and character.

Very few things better than Bath basking in winter afternoon sun!

(and we miss that sun dearly)

We completed this renovation and conversion over twenty years ago, transforming Grade II Listed Farmhouses and outbuildings into housing. Recently, we went back to visit - and it was a real pleasure to see it still looking so well cared for and well used.

The original stone buildings have been part of the landscape for generations. Our role was to repair, adapt and give them a new future, without losing what made them special in the first place.

Two decades on, it is still doing exactly what it was meant to do.

Still very proud of this one!

There is something quietly special about a dining room like this. At Tyndall Villa, our aim was to create a calm, characterful dining room within a period guest house renovation - somewhere that feels intimate but full of light. Soft sage panelling wraps the walls, and the oversized antique-effect mirror reflects light from the roof lantern, giving the space depth without losing warmth.

We paired natural timber floors with darker wood tables and deep green leather chairs to ground the scheme, while botanical artwork keeps the room connected to the garden beyond.

If you would like to see more of this interior design project, you can explore the full Tyndall Villa renovation via the link in our bio.

As a Bath based practice working on period homes across the UK, projects like Tyndall Villa are always a privilege to shape.

3D and sketches are an important tool for the clients (and us!) to provide an idea of how the final building will look. Here's an example of render vs reality for our Red Cedar House project.

Finished Red Cedar House, a 4 bedroom family home situated in the historic town of Marshfield 🌿

The site was associated with a listed building on Marshfield’s High street and is a part of the Marshfield conservation area. It had seen several planning proposals over the years. David Brain Partnership was tasked to navigate this challenging planning environment and secure a planning permission for a family home on the north side of the plot. This was achieved by implementing a considered approach, which took the surrounding area as the main source of inspiration, and sympathetic materials such as the Cotswold stone, natural slate and timber cladding. The design followed a well recognised local pattern of a main building surrounded by extensions that were added through the years.

Before and after of a garden house on the outskirts of Bath, which was completed in 2021. The indoor / outdoor space replaced an old outbuilding. The design allows for the large folding doors to be open in the summer while being warm and letting the sunshine in during the winter months. DBP carefully integrated the existing architecture and local materials with the wishes of the client.

The end result is a much loved and much used space in the garden 🌿
