I have been posting up a bit about what I am growing etc but I have been working quietly behind the scenes on projects and I am sharing this one where the 1920’s house is being renovated and my client wanted to jump straight into doing bits in the established garden. (Only some of the planting plan sheets shown) Keeping structural trees within the scheme a rambling, soft planting scheme created with some more unusual planting with wildflower areas, pond, internal hedges and a gorgeous gravel planting courtyard with set in paving.

It’s Friday!! Whoop 🙌
Thought I would share with you my new polytunnel and produce - it’s has gone wild and yes I have lost the tomatoes and the pruning- but I dont mind. I grew from seed Aubergines, Kotlas tomatoes from Australia and I got given unusual tomatoes- Evil Olive, wild tomato, blackcurrant etc. Cucumbers 4 x plants and mini, knobbly one and smooth skin one. The tunnel still isn’t finished as I have the path to install but it’s so much fun. 🤩
There is also tons of basil, a wild African basil, Nero kale and purple sprouting which at present are sacrificial but will re sprout again once white butterflies are gone. It doesn’t bother me as everything has to eat to reproduce and my aim is to increase the insect population.

Wanted to share these planter combinations to show that even a small terrace, 3 stories up with planters big enough you can create some fab planting that even an 80yr old can water with irrigation. (No water tap outside).The opposite side is blessed with more shade and has a different feel to the planting. It is next to the dining area so a cool lush green to relax around whereas the hot sun planting is punchy and blousy and can easily be seen from inside. The colour of the planters relates to the colour on the interior walls so there is a unity and connection.
These photos are over the last 2 months and it has only got a little more blousy and lush.
Don’t be afraid of colour in your planters as it can connect and link your space. Be brave!!

Gorgeous weekend WOMAD Festival which was in walking distance from home in Neston. Fab music, wellness, food and loads more and couldn’t resist this The Bee Rosie McLay: Anatomy & Nature in Art, Celebrated in Gold. Stunning etchings and it is now in my office!!

What is surviving with no water… wisterias, althaea cannabina, lobelia tupa, perovskia & Erigeron, greater knapweed seedheads, butterfly on knautia arvensis, wildflowers gone brown,lavender & everlasting sweet pea.
Even though the wildflowers at a distance have gone brown as you get close there is still a lot of life going on.
As we will continue to get ever dry conditions with extreme wet conditions we have to adapt our planting. We are getting g hosepipe bans because we are using too much water generally and that is a lot of households with multiple showers a day. We cannot be so over indulgent after all we don’t collect the water to use back into the household as they do in Australia.
I am loving the challenge to see what plants just don’t need to be watered and looking into the planting medium which will see them good in times of heavy rain.. enjoy peeps cause when it breaks it will be in style!

Saturday visit to RHS Badminton show and what a glorious day. Have to say it was awesome and I came back loaded with some unusual plants and inspired. Loving the amount of reclaimed materials used and it has galvanised my thoughts on reusing all the concrete I am digging out.
Special mention for ‘The Julia Rausing Memorial Garden’ - think it is his best yet and I will be growing some of those plants. Silo:All that comes in Remains by Abi Stoyle’s Garden, I have a love of cork but just inspiring to use as a wall and love that pergola. Ruskin Mill Trust ‘Artisan Woodland Craft Garden’ preserving these ancient crafts is essential but allowing young people to find their destiny through these set ups because they don’t fit the boxes our current education system rolls out and I know that well enough with my son who wasn’t able to regurgitate the information in the required exam format and he is far from stupid which this system makes them feel like. Then lastly for me The Split Basketry Garden by - what can I say but from the hard landscaping to the planting - just lovely. An absolute favourite and will be stealing some of those ideas….and I hope to do a workshop with Florence Hamer….

Something a bit different…. My planning application for renovations has been approved!! Drawn up by my good friend Madelein Snyman - Planning & Design - it went through without a hitch and involves sinking a rain water harvesting tank as well as knocking out a few walls, steel work and of course a living roof! Wouldn’t be me without a living roof!! So now to find a builder for next spring that I can work with to transform this bungalow into a mid century style home.

So excited …..

So how hot is too hot for your dog? I passed a girl walking her dog today along country lanes with no shade just after 11.30am. I cursed myself for not stopping- It was 30degrees. So I went off to B&Q in Chippenham and thought I would detour home via the route I had come to see if she was still walking and was dismayed to see she was still pounding the tarmac. Small dog with thick black coat. I stopped and said I would take her and the dog home as it was way too hot to be walking and her dog would be suffering. She insisted she was ok and indicated a water bottle on her shoulder…. Dismayed I still tried to get through to her the danger for her dog and the temperature of the tarmac. But still she politely declined saying she was only 5 mins from home.
When I first passed them the dog was lagging behind and it must have been another 40mins before I came across them again.
What can be done because it’s too late when the pooch suffers heatstroke and no amount of water will stop that. How can we get through to dog owners the responsibility to their animals and not just convenience to themselves.
I started work outside today at 6.30am and finished at 11.30am because even in the shade I was melting and that is without a fur coat on… please everyone think of your animals and wait until it is cool to walk them. They have a big pain threshold so will not show you pain until damage is done

I am very lucky to be able to come to when I like and it’s a dream on the solstice when the conditions are like this. It has been quiet and good to slow down, some work being required with bracken pulling, scything and de tick the body as there does seem to be a huge amount! The deer stay away when I am round but with the long grass you cannot help but get covered. Welcome to summer 💕
