Work is almost complete on our , and internal to a splendid seventeenth century . The grade II building lies within the Conservation Area of the picturesque village of , just north of .

The existing 1970s extension was removed and a new added that can be used all year around and take advantage of the stunning south-facing views across the valley. It is formed with an , local stone walls, and rooflights, and a . Internally, new openings were re-established and flags laid over a heated floor.

Two outbuildings were removed to expand the size of the terrace and improve the aspect from the new garden room. The existing terrace and steps were partially re-built using local stone. A metal balustrade and planting will soon be added.

The stables block adjacent to the terrace was also converted to provide a boot room, utility room and guest cloakroom. In addition, underfloor heating and double glazed steel windows were added within the main house.

James Armitage was delighted to have been involved as Course Director in the recent Foundation Urban Design Summer School at .

In addition to talks, discussions, sketching exercises, and town and site tours, the course involved the students undertaking a group design for a strategic masterplan on a large site and more detailed work on a smaller aspect of their scheme.

The students came from a wide variety of backgrounds – many with no design experience at all – and showed incredible enthusiasm and energy. Some wonderful feedback has already been received. We hope that they are now better equipped to consider the design of places that are enjoyable, sustainable and stand the test of time.

What an intense and stimulating three days! A big thank you to all the students - who came from a wide range of backgrounds - and brought such energy and enthusiasm to the course. It is truly remarkable what they were able to contribute and produce in such a short period of time!
