Macks Plastering is run by Adam Mackenzie.

Based in Upton Grey (Hampshire) near to the Hook and Basingstoke areas, Macks Plastering is a family run plastering contractor covering North Hampshire and surrounding areas. Macks Plastering was previously located in Farnborough, and still operates in this area. Adam completed his City & Guilds qualifications over the year of 2007, and Macks Plastering was established in 2008. Adam believes in transparency, and unlike some trades does not feel the need to elaborate on his experience or skills. Prior to embarking on a career in plastering, Adam's background was in account management. The change was brought on following the realisation that life is too short to do a job that does not reward nor challenge you in the way that he feels plastering does. After he qualified, Adam spent two years' subcontracting with other plastering firms (including one with two generations and over forty years' of plastering experience behind them) whilst continuing to build up his own business. His time with these firms not only honed his skills, but helped to develop the attention to detail that Macks Plastering is known for today. Our Approach
We believe that what the customer wants most are two things - honesty and good workmanship. Our aim with Macks Plastering is to provide both on every single job undertaken, week in week out. We appreciate that employing a tradesman can be daunting. Our team will create minimum disturbance to you and your home or work place with any work carried out. You can expect our plasterers to always be polite and do their utmost not to disturb your usual routine. We make minimum mess, provide extensive plastic sheeting and will always clear up at the end of a job. Macks Plastering holds Public Liability Insurance up to £1,000,000 to cover for any accidental damage done to you or your property whilst we are on site. Full employers insurance is also in place.

Not sure what to call the thing you need fixing? You're in good company.

A lot of people ring Adam about their roof when they mean the ceiling, or ask about the architrave when they mean the coving. It makes no difference. Nobody needs the right words to get a job looked at.

The easiest way to explain it is a photo. Stand back far enough to get the whole wall or ceiling in, then take one close up of the bit that bothers you. That's enough for Adam to start.

Someone's sleeping in there at Christmas. The spare room has been the room with the door shut for months. Now somebody's coming to stay.

In Old Basing last month Adam moved the light in this bedroom and skimmed over the artex ceiling. One visit, and the room looks years newer.

The catch is drying time. New plaster has to dry before it can be painted, and once the heating's on and the days are short, that takes longer. So a room you want finished for Christmas wants plastering before December.

Having the electrics updated often means a good part of the ceiling comes down to get at the wiring, and you're left with a hole and an old artex ceiling round it.

That's how this lounge ceiling in Hook looked. Once the electrician had finished, Adam reboarded the section that had been cut out, then skimmed the whole ceiling rather than just patching the hole.

Skimming the lot gives one smooth, modern ceiling with no join to catch your eye. If you have wiring being done, or a ceiling that's been left part finished after other work, call or text Adam on 07986 999938. 👍

If you want a room decorated before Christmas, the plastering needs doing in the next few weeks.

Not a sales line, just how the order of works falls. Plaster has to go on, then dry properly, then take a mist coat, then be decorated, and none of that can be rushed without ruining it. Leave it until November and you are painting in December with the windows shut and the heating on.

Autumn is also when this becomes obvious to everybody at once. The light drops, people start looking at their rooms differently, and the diary fills.

Adam has space over the next few weeks. If you have been meaning to sort a ceiling, a cracked wall or a room that has never looked right, this is the point in the year where getting it booked actually matters.

You've painted over that patch twice now, and it's back. Damp is the one that worries people. It feels like something's wrong with the house rather than just the wall, and it's the thing you notice guests noticing.

Here's the thing though. Sometimes it is a damp problem, and sometimes it's a gutter, or a raised path, or a leak that was fixed a year ago and the wall simply never dried out. The honest answer is that you need to know which before anyone touches the plaster, because replastering over a live problem is money thrown at a wall.

When it does need doing properly, it means taking it back to sound material, treating it, and re-skimming. Dirtier and slower than a patch, and the difference between fixing it and hiding it for eighteen months.

Here is some advice that costs Adam money. If you are thinking of having a ceiling done in a room you are going to gut next year, do not. Wait.

It comes up most often with bathrooms. The ceiling looks tired, so it gets skimmed, and then twelve months later the suite comes out, the tiles come off, something gets knocked, a new extractor goes in, and the ceiling that was paid for last year needs doing again.

Same with a kitchen. Same with any room where something structural is coming later.

The rule is boring and it saves people hundreds: do the room once, at the end, when everything that is coming out has come out. Plastering is one of the last jobs, not one of the first.

Adam will tell you this when he comes out rather than take the work twice, which is occasionally an awkward conversation and has never once been the wrong call.

You won't know whether the plastering is any good until it's painted. By then it's too late.

That's the awkward thing about hiring a plasterer. Almost everything else in a house you can judge for yourself. A wall looks flat to most people whether it is or not, and the truth only shows up months later when the light hits it in April and you start seeing every ripple.

So you're buying on trust, and all you really have to go on is whether the person has done it enough times.

Adam qualified in 2007 and has worked independently ever since. Nineteen years, the first couple spent alongside a firm with two generations and forty years behind it. Forty-three reviews on Google. Over five hundred on Checkatrade. The person who comes out to provide an estimate is the person who turns up and does the job.

You didn't build it to sit in a shed.

Whatever the reason was, an office away from the house, a room for a teenager who needs their own space, somewhere to put the drum kit, somewhere that's finally yours, the point was always that it feels like part of the house rather than something in the garden.

Boarded out, it doesn't. It looks like a building site with ambitions, and you can see every joint and screw in it.

Skimmed, it stops being a structure and becomes a room. Same with a garage conversion. It's the single thing that makes the difference between somewhere you use and somewhere you keep meaning to sort out.

Adam can board it as well as skim it, so it doesn't need to be ready for him. If yours is watertight and waiting, that's the point to get it booked. 👍

There's a bit of wall behind your radiator that'll never look right, and you'll know it's there.

Here's how it happens. The plumber runs the pipes, chases them into the wall, and hangs the radiator back on before he leaves, because that's one visit and he's done.

Then the plasterer arrives to fill the channels, with a radiator bolted over the top of them. You can't get behind it properly, so that patch is never as good as the rest of the wall.

Everyone else will think the room looks lovely. You'll look at that bit.

Ask your plumber to hang them last. Pipes in, plastering done, then radiator back on a finished wall. It takes a second visit, which is why it doesn't happen by default, but most will do it if you ask at the start. 👍
