Spot the Joists? Neither Could We…

We were called in to assess and resolve a dangerously unstable floor in a very old cottage — and what we found underneath was a bit of a shock.

Instead of proper joists, someone had used literal quarter sections of a small tree. Not milled timber. Not planks. Just rough, shallow cuts of trunk that would never pass today’s standards.

Rather than ripping out the entire first floor, we took a more thoughtful approach:
🔹 Carefully removed only the affected flooring
🔹 Reinforced the existing joists
🔹 Reinstalled the original floorboards

Now the floor feels solid once again — hopefully for the next 100 years! The client also wisely had the electrics checked.
