Commercial flowerbeds left to fade over autumn make a whole property look tired, even if the building itself is spotless.

September is decision time. Summer bedding is on its way out and whatever goes in now decides how your grounds look right through to the first frosts.

We're moving clients over to autumn-hardy planting: chrysanthemums, asters and ornamental cabbages for structure and colour that holds up in cooler, wetter weather. Bulbs go in this month too, so spring displays aren't an afterthought planted in a rush come March.

Lawns: why DIY treatment plans often stall

A patchy lawn usually isn't down to laziness. It's down to timing.

DIY feeding and w**d control tends to happen whenever there's a spare Saturday, not when the grass actually needs it. Professional programmes work the other way round: treatments go down when soil temperature and growth stage call for them, not when the calendar suggests.

That's why a lawn can get mowed every week and still stay lumpy and tired. Cutting isn't the same as caring for it. Real improvement comes from aeration, proper feeding, and levelling out the lows and highs underneath the surface, not just what happens on top.

A busy office with daily footfall needs a different rhythm to a community hall used twice a week. Get the frequency right and you keep the space presentable without paying for visits it doesn't need.

Here's a rough guide we work to with clients across Worcestershire and the West Midlands:

High footfall offices: daily cleaning for touchpoints, communal areas and kitchens.
Community spaces and halls: cleaning tied to usage, often 2 to 3 times a week rather than daily.
Windows: every 4 to 8 weeks depending on location and exposure to traffic or weather.

The right mulch does more than tidy up flowerbeds

Not all mulch is equal, and picking the wrong one can cost you in water bills and w**d control down the line.

Bark mulch looks sharp and breaks down slowly, so it's ideal for beds that don't get disturbed often. It also suppresses w**ds well, which means less time spent hand-w**ding borders.

Woodchip is cheaper and great for larger commercial areas, but it draws nitrogen from the soil as it decomposes. That can leave plants short on nutrients unless it's topped up carefully.

Composted bark sits in between: it feeds the soil while it breaks down, so it suits beds with shrubs or perennials that need a nutrient boost.
