We've had plenty of wet weather lately — and that's when problems with the outside of a property can become much easier to spot.

After heavy rain, take a quick look at:

🔍 Gutters overflowing?
🔍 Water running down the walls?
🔍 Damaged pointing?
🔍 Cracked render?
🔍 Roof tiles looking out of place?
🔍 Damp patches appearing internally?

Penetrating damp can sometimes be much more obvious after prolonged rainfall.

Don't ignore a small patch because it's "only appeared after the rain".

That may be the clue you've been looking for.

Recurring mould can be a sign that there's an ongoing moisture or ventilation issue.

Common areas include:

One of the regular questions we get:

"Is this damp or condensation?"

And it's an important question because the solution depends on the cause.

Condensation is often associated with:

💧 Water droplets on windows
🦠 Mould around windows and corners
🌫️ Steamy rooms
👕 Drying clothes indoors
🌡️ Cold surfaces
🌬️ Poor ventilation

But mould doesn't automatically mean condensation.

There can be other causes of moisture too.

That's why it's important to understand what's causing the problem before deciding how to treat it.

If you're constantly wiping condensation from your windows or battling recurring mould, don't just keep cleaning it and hoping it goes away.

🏠 Penetrating Damp — Look Up!

Sometimes the clue to a damp problem isn't inside the house at all…

Penetrating damp occurs when water gets through the external fabric of the building.

Common causes include:

🌧️ Damaged or blocked gutters
🧱 Defective pointing
🏠 Roof defects
🪟 Failed seals around windows
🧱 Cracked or damaged masonry
💦 Faulty rainwater goods

The result can be damp staining, peeling finishes, mould and deterioration internally.

And here's the important bit…

Painting over the stain won't fix the problem.

The source of the moisture needs to be identified and dealt with.
