A proud moment for L J Mullan Electrical!

From winning National Electrical Apprentice of the Year at the Electrical Industry Awards back in 2015, during my apprenticeship, to being named Domestic Electrical Contractor of the Year 2026/27 at the London & South East England Prestige Awards.

It’s been quite a journey over the past 11 years, and it’s lovely to see the hard work, dedication and commitment to maintaining high standards recognised along the way.

Running a small, family-run electrical business certainly comes with its challenges, but I genuinely take great pride in the work I carry out and the service I provide.

A few examples of older consumer units and fuse boards we regularly come across during electrical inspections.

An older consumer unit does not automatically mean the installation is unsafe, but it may lack some of the protection commonly found in modern installations.

Older boards can include:

• Rewireable fuses or older circuit breakers
• Plastic enclosures
• Limited or no RCD protection
• Older Type AC RCDs
• No surge protection
• Several circuits sharing one RCD

Modern consumer units can provide improved protection through individual Type A RCBOs, Type 2 surge protection and better circuit separation, meaning a fault on one circuit is less likely to affect the rest of the property.

It’s also worth remembering that an old fuse board does not necessarily mean the property needs rewiring. The overall condition of the installation should always be properly inspected and tested first.

This is why EICRs are about more than just whether the electrics work…

This is something I occasionally come across when carrying out EICRs in Banbury, particularly in older blocks of flats around areas such as Alma Road.

The supply to the consumer unit is run in armoured cable (SWA), with one of the cores being used as the main earth.

The problem? 👀

The earth conductor was too large to fit properly into the terminal, so instead of using a suitable termination method, some of the copper strands had simply been cut away to make it fit.

The installation may appear to work perfectly normally — but the earth is there for when something goes wrong.

Reducing the size of the earthing conductor can:

⚠️ Increase the resistance of the fault path
⚠️ Reduce the amount of fault current that can flow
⚠️ Potentially affect how quickly protective devices disconnect
⚠️ Cause additional heating at the termination in the event of a fault
⚠️ Reduce the effectiveness of the protective earthing arrangement

It’s exactly the sort of issue a homeowner or landlord would probably never know was there until the installation was properly inspected.

At L J Mullan Electrical, we carry out Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) throughout Banbury and the surrounding villages, checking the condition and safety of the electrical installation — not simply whether everything switches on.

⚡ Oops… straight through the cable! 😬

This customer was putting up some shelves when the drill went directly through an electrical cable concealed in the wall above a switch.

Electrical cables are commonly routed vertically above and below switches and sockets, so these are areas you should always be cautious of when drilling. That said, mistakes happen — and this customer definitely won’t be the last! 🔨⚡

We attended, located the damaged section and safely repaired the connections inside a suitable maintenance-free junction box, positioned deeper within the wall so the area can be made good afterwards. 👍

⚡ Does your fuseboard look like this?

If it does, it doesn’t automatically mean it’s unsafe or that you need a new one.

However, electrical safety has moved on considerably. Modern consumer units can offer additional protection such as 30mA Type A RCBOs, surge protection (SPD) and metal fire-resistant enclosures.

During an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report), we test and inspect the electrical installation to identify potential faults, deterioration and areas where safety could be improved.

One thing we always try to do is give customers clear and honest advice. An older consumer unit may still be serviceable, but understanding what protection you currently have — and what newer technology can offer — helps you make an informed decision.

🏆 We’re incredibly proud to share some exciting news!

A little while ago, L J Mullan Electrical was shortlisted for the South East England Prestige Awards 2026/27.

I’m delighted to say that I recently received a call to let me know that we have been named Domestic Electrical Contractor of the Year.

As a small, family-run business, awards like this mean a great deal. Every review, recommendation and customer who has trusted me to work in their home has helped make this possible.

Hidden electrical faults aren’t always obvious… ⚡

This property in Banbury had no end-to-end continuity on the line and neutral conductors of the ring final circuit.

Rather than removing every socket, I checked the accessories most likely to have been altered over the years. The line conductor fault was found at the socket with the surface trunking, while the neutral conductor fault was found at the socket backing onto the extension.

The surprising part? The sockets would have still worked as normal, meaning the homeowner would have had no indication there was an underlying fault.

Both faults were rectified, the circuit was retested, and satisfactory end-to-end continuity readings were restored.

It’s a great reminder that just because your electrics appear to be working doesn’t always mean everything is safe. An EICR can identify hidden defects before they become a bigger problem.
