⚡ Does your fuseboard look like this?

If it does, it doesn’t automatically mean it’s unsafe or that you need a new one.

However, electrical safety has moved on considerably. Modern consumer units can offer additional protection such as 30mA Type A RCBOs, surge protection (SPD) and metal fire-resistant enclosures.

During an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report), we test and inspect the electrical installation to identify potential faults, deterioration and areas where safety could be improved.

One thing we always try to do is give customers clear and honest advice. An older consumer unit may still be serviceable, but understanding what protection you currently have — and what newer technology can offer — helps you make an informed decision.

Hidden electrical faults aren’t always obvious… ⚡

This property in Banbury had no end-to-end continuity on the line and neutral conductors of the ring final circuit.

Rather than removing every socket, I checked the accessories most likely to have been altered over the years. The line conductor fault was found at the socket with the surface trunking, while the neutral conductor fault was found at the socket backing onto the extension.

The surprising part? The sockets would have still worked as normal, meaning the homeowner would have had no indication there was an underlying fault.

Both faults were rectified, the circuit was retested, and satisfactory end-to-end continuity readings were restored.

It’s a great reminder that just because your electrics appear to be working doesn’t always mean everything is safe. An EICR can identify hidden defects before they become a bigger problem.

⚡ Hypervolt EV Charger Installation Completed ⚡

Another EV charger installed, this time using a Hypervolt Home 3 Pro – a charger we highly recommend thanks to its reliability, smart features and sleek design.

For a clean, discreet finish, the cable was installed externally using D-Line cable clips, keeping everything neat and in keeping with the property.

On this installation it wasn’t practical to run a new circuit all the way back to the main consumer unit, and the existing board also wasn’t suitable for supplying an EV charger. To provide a safe and compliant solution, I installed a new IP-rated distribution board complete with:

✅ Double-pole Type A RCBO protection
✅ Type 2 Surge Protection Device (SPD)
✅ Dedicated protection for the EV charger

Every EV charger installation I carry out includes:

✔ Full inspection and testing
✔ Electrical Installation Certificate issued
✔ Building Regulations notification submitted to Building Control
✔ All paperwork provided to the customer

These are legal requirements for domestic EV charger installations, so you should always receive the correct certification and notification once the work is complete.

⚡ Consumer Unit Upgrade Completed in Banbury ⚡

This property still had an older Wylex fuse board fitted with rewireable fuses and no additional protection in the form of 30mA RCBOs or surge protection.

As part of the upgrade, I installed a new metal consumer unit complete with:

✅ Type A RCBO protection on all circuits
✅ Type 2 Surge Protection Device (SPD)
✅ Individual circuit protection
✅ Improved fault discrimination
✅ Full testing and certification

One of the key improvements is the use of Type A RCBOs rather than the older Type AC devices. Modern homes contain more electronic equipment than ever before, including EV chargers, washing machines, induction hobs, LED lighting and power supplies, which can generate DC residual currents. Type A devices are designed to detect these fault currents, whereas Type AC devices may not operate correctly under certain fault conditions.

The new consumer unit also includes Type 2 surge protection as standard, helping to protect sensitive electrical equipment from transient overvoltages caused by events such as lightning strikes and switching surges on the electrical network.

Due to cables entering the board from multiple directions and some conductors being particularly short, a FuseBox spacer frame was installed to provide additional wiring space and allow for a much neater installation. These jobs can be challenging, but we always aim to leave every consumer unit as tidy and organised as possible.

Compared to older rewireable fuse boards, modern consumer units offer significantly improved protection against electric shock, fire and electrical faults, making them one of the most worthwhile safety upgrades for many homes.

🔧 A simple light switch replacement isn’t always as straightforward as it first appears.

On this job in Banbury, the existing light switch had been removed previously, but the wall opening had been cut far too large for a standard fast-fix box to be secured properly.

Rather than carrying out unnecessary wall repairs, I used a box strap to create a secure fixing point, allowing the new light switch to be installed safely and professionally.

It’s often these hidden issues that homeowners don’t see, but taking the time to put them right ensures the installation is safe, secure and built to last.
