BUILDING UP AGAINST BEDROCK
It can be tricky to build a path alongside sloping bedrock - to get your stones to ‘bite’ into it and not slide away down the hill. We’ve jammed a great 1m long bit of granite in at the bottom, and used that to build our further steps off.

We’re demonstrating how to build a traditional dry stone wall again this year - come and have a look at the Traditional Skills day at Cultra. There are a range of other crafts on display also!

What lovely medieval Vaulting! (And a very good breakfast) in the old crypt of the Vicars Choral at Chichester. This was a storeroom for the accommodation of the Vicars who would sing masses at the Cathedral in the Middle Ages. The heavy, squat columns are Norman, from the late 12th century, while the slightly pointed arches signify the transition to early Gothic work.

More limewash - hot mixed and applied straight away to the studio walls. It can go on concrete block as readily as stone or plaster.

BACK TO SCHOOL
Amazing how much you pay attention when you’ve put yourself in the classroom voluntarily. 96 pages of notes and some homework I’ve set myself!
Learned so much, mostly about bats. Made it back, quite late in the end.

WEST DEAN COLLEGE Building Conservation Masterclass, Managing Wildlife in the Historic Environment. The school itself is a feast for the eyes, with knapped flint in all sorts of shapes and sizes, cut stone and lots of art. The indoor ‘Ruinette’ where building and plastering are demonstrated is a great resource. We also made a trip to The Devil’s Jumps barrows, with species-rich chalk grassland on them. Generously funded by . I’ve also quite enjoyed being indoors for a few days, letting on I’m a scholar. 🔨🔨🔨🖋️
