173 years of history, carefully preserved.

As main contractor at Market Yard Buildings, Shane’s Castle Estate, Randalstown, Stuart Penrose Roofing has been working under Historic Environment Division (HED) guidance to help safeguard this 173-year-old building.

The original roof undulations are part of its character. Retaining that familiar shape, salvaging and reusing natural slates, and refitting the existing ridge tiles have been central to our approach.

Beneath the slates, concealed timber deterioration required careful replacement, while retaining sound historic material wherever possible.

A special mention to the lads for the care, hard work and pride they’ve put into this project. It has been a valuable hands-on experience for the whole team, including our apprentices—developing traditional roofing skills and learning how to work sensitively with historic buildings.

Passing that knowledge on to the next generation is an important part of keeping these skills alive.

As the project nears completion, we’re proud of the team and their contribution to preserving this piece of Randalstown’s heritage.

Thinking about upgrading your conservatory roof? Read this first.

An insulated warm roof can transform a conservatory into a comfortable living space all year round. However, over the past few years I've been asked to inspect an increasing number of installations where one important detail appears to have been overlooked.

The photograph below shows a typical abutment gulley between the conservatory roof and the house wall.

As the new roof is raised, this drainage channel can become extremely narrow. Add a soil vent pipe, and routine inspection, cleaning and maintenance become very difficult. It doesn't take much leaf debris or moss to restrict the flow of water.

Last year alone, I was asked to rectify three conservatory roof installations with this type of detail. In each case, the problem took years to develop before the homeowners experienced water ingress. By then, the original installing company had no interest in returning.

When I questioned one installer about this design, I was told:

"We do hundreds like this every year."

Perhaps they do.

But that isn't the question homeowners should be asking.

The real question is:

"How will this gulley and any hidden gutters be inspected, cleaned and maintained over the next 20 years?"

Good roofing isn't just about creating a roof that looks impressive on the day it's is completed. It's about designing details that remain accessible, maintainable and serviceable for decades.

Sometimes the biggest roofing problems aren't caused by poor workmanship—they're caused by details that were never designed with future maintenance in mind.

We approached Stuart Penrose roofing to reslate our old leaky roof that had started to loose slates every year. Stuart provided a very comprehensive survey and itemised list of the work required and a proposed timescale and start date. While he was unable to start on the initial date proposed he kept us informed regularly. Having seen him work and his great attention to detail it is hardly surprising that occasionally a job might run over time. The craftmanship and sympathy according to house age and style required some unique work and beautiful use of copper flashing. This is now a stunning feature of the house. Stuart cleaned and reused many of the old beautiful and difficult to source slates and found matches for any replacements needed. He even laid part of the roof with temporary slates to see if the size and shade would work. We had one mishap with a step being damaged during scaffolding but Stuart researched and tested a number of possible solutions and made an excellent repair which should age well with the existing surroundings. His suggestion for guttering replacement including colour were perfect and we are extremely happy with the result. I cannot recommend Stuart Penrose highly enough. He takes his time to do the job well and to the highest standards.

January and February tried to drown us…
March finally remembered what the sun looks like ☀️

First dry run in weeks and the lads didn’t waste a second — straight on it in Bangor, stripped, loaded, and moving like they’ve been waiting all winter for this one.
