As Midlands groundworks specialists delivering foundations, drainage, roads and sewers, our teams regularly excavate near buried live cables.

A standard shovel contacting a live conductor can cause serious shock or injury. That’s why insulated shovels are essential kit on our sites.

These tools have non-conductive fibreglass shafts with dual insulation layers, a hand stop to keep hands off the blade, and rounded edges that reduce cable damage.

Each one is flash tested to 10,000V and certified to BS 8020:2011 for safe use near live services.

They complement our CAT scanning, permits and hand digging in tolerance zones. Combined with our CHAS accreditation, NRSWA qualified team and trench box systems, they help keep everyone safe while we stay on programme.

Pile Caps Job – Smethwick, West Midlands.

Another site underway for Hayes & Sons Construction Ltd. 🚧

We’re currently digging out and backfilling the pile caps ready for piling at the next stage. This one came with an extra challenge, packed full of steel from the previous loading bay.

Our team is methodically clearing it, getting the ground ready properly so the foundations go in right first time.

Steam, Heritage & Hayes & Sons in Ireland!
🚜 🇮🇪

We’re proud to share that the Ilson Crushers have been showing at the Moynalty Steam Threshing Festival for over 10 years.

Our very own James Hayes joined the team again for the weekend. A special plaque brought over from the UK (from last year’s 2025 rally) is now proudly on display in the museum, alongside photos of the gang from previous years.

There’s nothing quite like watching how roads and works were done the old fashioned way (pure steam power and proper craftsmanship).

Thank you Moynalty for another fantastic weekend. Already looking forward to next year!
