Castle Roy

Directions Website

Castle Roy Probably the oldest masonry fortification in Scotland, built c1200. Associations with the Mar, Comyn

After 29 years of work undertaken by the Castle Roy Trust, the Castle is now safe for visitors to wander around and is ready for WEDDINGS and PERFORMANCES in the grounds with utilities on site and a large area flattened for marquees. The Bards Bowl and Panoramic Picnic Point allow for fun and games for the whole family and is proving a popular place for watching sunsets, Aurora Borealis or just the fantastic views down Strathspey.

QR codes. New ones are SAFE. :)

It was brought to our attention that the QR codes were not working on the signs. We have added the ones you will find in other places to each sign. This was us and will take you to the correct link.

Thank you one and all for all the donations. You keep this little piece of history going for future generations.

We have loved seeing Castle Roy used for weddings this year, each one wonderfully different and each making the most of this very special place.
Anna & Alexander, who came all the way from Austria to marry at Castle Roy. They met at kindergarten so enjoyed the table that was provided for signing their marriage certificate!

❤️ Ally & Sarah celebrated their elopement in May. A simple family affair which was a joy.
❤️ Kirstin & Jonny had rather more excitement than anyone wants on their wedding day when their plans at Castle Roy had to be cancelled because of the wildfire. Their beautiful set-up was already in place, but Speyside Events Company did an incredible job of saving the day and making sure they still had a wonderful wedding.
❤️ Nicola & Daniel gave us another collection of beautiful photographs. We particularly love the image showing our new heavy-duty gazebo in use. They also left us some wonderful gifts which was so kind when they had been so busy.

A very welcome return to Castle Roy ❤️

For many years, swifts nested at Castle Roy, but sadly they disappeared during the major renovation works.

So we were absolutely delighted this summer to discover that they're back!

Even better, a pair chose Castle Roy as their home, successfully raised a family and their youngsters have now fledged. 🐦

Swifts are becoming increasingly scarce as many of their traditional nesting places in old buildings disappear, so having them return to the Castle feels rather special.

We very much hope this is the beginning of a new generation of Castle Roy swifts and that they'll be back again next summer.

Some residents, it seems, simply refuse to be kept away by a few centuries of building work. ❤️

Hi there everyone.
A couple of items were left behind the night of the Eclipse. If they are yours, please let us know, l am sure the young equine vaulter may be missing their team jacket. And someones charger may be important.

Last week, the Scottish Government announced a £3 million fund to support those affected by the Cairngorms wildfire, which is now being administered by The Highland Council.
Our hearts go out particularly to the many local businesses that have lost a far greater proportion of their income during what should be their busiest time of year, and to everyone in the Glenmore corridor who had to leave their homes and businesses during the evacuation.
It has been an extraordinarily difficult time for our whole area.
Castle Roy has also felt the effects. We estimate that the wildfire has cost us the equivalent of around 10% of our annual expenditure, through cancelled events and a significant drop in visitor numbers.
We understand that Castle Roy will not be eligible for any of the Scottish Government funding, but unfortunately our bills carry on! Insurance, maintenance, accountancy, electricity, our website and all the other costs involved in looking after this wonderful old castle still have to be paid.
But helping us doesn’t have to mean simply making a donation. You could hold an event here or, by acquiring a Square Yard of Castle Roy, you are helping to look after the castle while getting something in return: your own little piece of Castle Roy, complete with a certificate. It can be in your own name, or make a rather unusual gift for someone special.

🏰 Acquire your Square Yard of Castle Roy castleroy.org.uk/square-yard/

Or, if a Square Yard isn’t for you, even £1, £2 or £5 makes a difference. As a certain supermarket keeps reminding us, every little helps!

And thank you, as always, for supporting Castle Roy in whatever way you can. It really doesn’t have to be money — even the occasional comment, share or ❤️ on one of our posts gives our volunteers a little boost and reminds us that people care about this wonderful old place. 🏰❤️

We're still very much open! 😊 However, motorhome visitors, please note that the Community Centre Elsan point is temporarily unavailable while the building is being used as the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) headquarters.
So, while that is closed, a reminder that full motorhome facilities are available at Garlyne Brae, only 2 miles away. The site is open to passing motorhomes, so you're very welcome to use its facilities. I do not know the cost.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing Cairngorms wildfire and the emergency response, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Castle Roy Car Boot Sale on Saturday 2 August.
The safety of our visitors, volunteers and the emergency services must come first, and we feel this is the most responsible course of action.
We sincerely apologise to everyone who was planning to come along, whether to sell, browse or support Castle Roy. Thank you for your understanding.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the fire, and we are incredibly grateful to all the firefighters and emergency services working tirelessly to protect our communities and countryside.
Our final Car Boot Sale of the year will take place on Sunday 6 September, and we very much hope you'll be able to join us then. We'll also have refreshments available, so do come along for a browse, a bargain, and a cuppa while supporting Castle Roy.
Thank you for your continued support. ❤️
