After months of work, we’ve finally completed the restoration of the stonework at Durham House.

The final elevation is now finished. We removed all cement mortar from the entire elevation, stripped and rebuilt the chimney using a blend of original reclaimed local sandstone and Birchover Stone Ltd.

Various stone replacements were carried out across the gable, before the whole elevation was doff cleaned and then received a full lime point. Stonehealth Ltd

Durham House – Rear Elevation (by the conservatory) some before ,during and after photos.

This elevation was likely in the worst condition of all. It had been completely covered in cement, hiding a multitude of underlying issues.

We replaced all of the window quoins and the lintel, using a blend of reclaimed stone alongside new Birchover stone. Each piece was carefully carved, tooled, and fitted by hand.

During the work, we uncovered a previous repair beneath one of the window cills where red bricks had been used. These were carefully removed and replaced with local sandstone, restoring the character and integrity of the original masonry.

The chimney was stripped back and fully rebuilt, again combining existing, reclaimed, and new stone. Much of the left-hand side of the gable also had to be rebuilt due to damage caused by excessive cement and long-term soot erosion of the original sandstone.

Once the structural work was complete, the entire elevation was sympathetically cleaned using the Doff system and finished with traditional lime mortar pointing.

A rewarding transformation, bringing the building back to a condition that respects its original character while ensuring its longevity.

We recently unveiled the finished front elevation of Durham house in Nairn.🏠.

We carried out numerous stone replacements across the facade. All 3 dormers were almost completely restored only salvaging what was deemed safe and sound original pieces. We carved , stripped and rebuilt all 3 ourselves using Birchover stone.

We carried out areas of injection work and replacements across the projecting course.

The elevation had a full DOFF clean and pointed with a NHL 2 lime mortar. All work was carried out by myself alongside Murren Masonry.

Just putting the final pieces onto the 3rd and final dormer.. I've been carrying out all the work alongside Murren Masonry. We've dismantled, carved and rebuilt all 3 dormers.
We used Birchover Stone Ltd. for this project.
