Steep garden? Challenge accepted. 💪🌿

The gabion steps have finally made it to the top of the patio!

With such steep access to this garden, machinery wasn’t an option, so the stone, the baskets and materials have all been carried in by hand (by me!) Definitely a workout. 😅

The gabions are now filled and dressed with Cotswold stone, creating practical access up through the garden while fitting naturally into the surrounding landscape.

We're not done yet though. Next in are the tiles and traditional railway sleepers set vertically alongside the steps. These will guide you down through the garden while adding a strong design feature as well as bringing another natural material into the landscape.

A lot of hard work behind what looks like a simple set of steps! But definitely worth it.

This new garden project is starting to take shape 🌿

A lot happens before the planting begins!

First up here was tackling the mare’s tail (horsetail), improving and feeding the soil, and preparing the ground for what’s to come.

NB. horsetail has been around for around 325 million years - it's great for wildlife, but its deep roots means it definitely needs keeping under control.

This garden sits in two halves, either side of the driveway, and this is stage one. We’re creating an accessible walkway to make maintaining the garden easier, surrounded by grasses, ferns, pollinator-friendly planting and easy-to-manage shrubs. Trees along the roadside will add another layer of greenery and provide some privacy.

The planting plans and 3D visuals show where we’re heading, now it’s time to start bringing it to life. 🌱

Every great garden begins with a conversation... and a sketch.

Our latest concept for a garden in Wilmslow explores how an underused space can become a beautiful outdoor retreat. From the initial mood boards and architectural inspiration through to detailed pavilion concepts, planting strategies and construction details, every element has been carefully considered before a single spade goes into the ground.

This isn't about choosing a pergola from a catalogue.

It's about designing a space that feels as though it was always meant to be there — balancing architecture, materials, planting, lighting and the way you'll actually use your garden.

Whether it's morning coffee, family gatherings or evenings around the fire, thoughtful design creates spaces you'll enjoy for years to come.

If you're thinking about transforming your garden, we'd love to help bring your ideas to life.

This sloped garden is currently being transformed with bespoke gabion retaining walls, integrated stone steps and layered terraces designed to completely reshape the space.

The combination of natural stone, steel detailing and warm timber tones is already starting to bring real structure and character to the garden, while creating practical, usable levels throughout.

Swipe through to see the build taking shape from framework stage to where the project is today.

Great day planting with Paul and the team at Olive Tree Landscaping Services 15+ trees planted, including a beautiful Sequoia, alongside layers of shrubs, perennials, and biodiverse wildflower planting.
This wasn’t an LND-designed garden, but I couldn’t resist sharing it. It’s great to see a local team taking so much pride in creating a garden properly focused on the soft landscaping and the long-term feel of the space.

Thanks again, Paul, for the opportunity to get involved. I really enjoyed working with you and the team on this. Can’t wait to see how the garden settles in and flourishes over time.🌱🌿🌳
