I had a call-out this week that perfectly illustrates why you need to be careful when searching for a local locksmith.

One of my now-customers did what most people do: they typed "local locksmith" into Google and clicked the first link. Here is what happened next:

🚗 The Red Flag: A guy turned up in an unmarked, unsigned car. No branding, no uniform.

💰 The "Quote": After looking at a simple job, he quoted £500 + Call-out fee + VAT.

🚫 The Result: Luckily, my customer knew something wasn't right and told him to leave immediately.

They called me instead. I arrived in a fully branded van, gave a transparent price, and completed the exact same job for QUARTER of that price—with NO call-out fee.

How to spot a Rogue Locksmith:

Unmarked vehicles: Professional locksmiths take pride in their branding.

Vague Pricing: If they won't give a ballpark figure over the phone, be wary.

Hidden Fees: Watch out for "call-out fees" added on top of massive labour charges.

Support local, vetted tradesmen. If a price feels like a robbery, it probably is!

How to spot a rouge locksmiths

Key Red Flags and Warning Signs

🔒Suspiciously Low Pricing:
Advertised prices of £39, £49, or £59 are often just "call-out" fees, which become much higher once the job is completed.

🔒"Bait and Switch" Tactics:
They quote a low price over the phone, but on arrival, they claim the job is more difficult and charge hundreds, or even thousands, of pounds.

🔒Immediate Destruction:
A rogue locksmith will often immediately drill or destroy a lock rather than attempting non-destructive entry, forcing you to pay for a new lock.

🔒Lack of Proper Identification/Branding:
They arrive in unmarked vehicles or civilian clothes without proper identification.

🔒"Police Approved" Claims:
They claim to be "Police Recommended" or "Police Approved". Note: The police do not recommend or approve specific locksmith companies.

🔒Generic Company Name:
They often use generic names (e.g., "Local Locksmith") rather than a specific business name.

🔒Call Center Diversion:
Instead of a local technician, your call is answered by a national call center.

🔒Cash-Only Demands:
They demand cash payments and refuse to provide a proper, detailed invoice or receipt.

How to Avoid Being Scammed

✅Ask for a Quote:
Ask for a full price breakdown, including parts and labor, before they start working.

✅Request Identification:
Ask for ID/DBS

✅Check Reviews:
Research local reviews, but be wary of fake, overwhelmingly generic positive reviews.

✅Get it in Writing:
Always ask for a written estimate. Get the locksmith to explain what they are going to do before any work starts

Replaced this simple nightlatch to a British standard high security nightlatch. Really good upgrade to stop unauthorized access. Looks great as well 😍

The emergency keyway had fallen apart so had no way of opening the safe when the batteries failed. That was until Templar locksmiths arrived. 20 minutes later the safe was open and the customer was able to get their important documents.

Had to fit some Digi code locks to these changing rooms in Cambridge. Had to cover existing holes as well and these security covers in white work very nicely.

Upgraded this door to a Ultion Nuki smart lock. Enables you to lock and unlock your door from your phone and even enables you to unlock your door with your phone in your pocket when you're within a certain distance from your home. All with a 3* high security cylinder.
Clever stuff, is this the way forward?.......... Possibly. Do I want one on my door?....... Definitely!

Busy day today changing all the locks at a newly purchased property. The customer wanted satin chrome to replace brass which I think looks great. Also had to pick the garage door open and replace the lock, not a drill in sight 👀 all done non destructively.
