Heading along the path towards the rock garden yesterday at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh I noticed a bed of these, quite hidden from most visitors view.
Double take and BANG!!!

Lilium formosanum Var. pricei from Taiwan (previously the country called Formosa), which I’ve not seen in many years, possibly since I was at Belsay Hall, Castle & Gardens. This clump hit me like a lightening bolt…instantly like seeing an old long lost friend.

If you get a chance to visit this coming week, have a look for this little gem, with unassuming foliage but superb flower. Let’s hope the one we planted at Belsay has increased multiple times and is thriving.

And if you find it at The Botanics, run up to it with a wide smile on your face, absolutely buzzing to reach it…congratulations.

Rose pruning!

I’ve been asked quite a few times recently how I deadhead roses and these photos show how I do them to keep the shape and encourage more blooms if repeat flowering roses.

Cut the whole flower head off just above another leaf (called node) at an angle, make sure you cut back into the general area of main growth to keep the shape, rather than just below the spent flower head. This hides the cut and ensures the new growth comes from there and keeps the plant healthy and dense with strong flower bud formation!

Use sharp and clean secateurs, watch your fingers and put healthy dead heads onto the compost heap.

Depending on the variety, you may well have blooms flowering into the winter months!

Popped up to the north shore of Lindisfarne at the weekend and the wild flowers were fantastic!

So many pyramidal orchids (Anacamptis pyramidalis) in the dunes, along with many other natives and the invasive piri piri burr from Australia and New Zealand.
