πŸ‚ The 'Ber' Months Checklist πŸ‚

September through to December is all about preparing your lawn for winter and giving it the best possible start for next year.

As temperatures begin to cool and rainfall becomes more frequent, grass can often recover from the stresses of summer. However, it's also a time when w**ds, moss, fallen leaves and wet conditions can create their own challenges.🌿

βœ… Book lawn renovation
βœ… Clear leaves
βœ… Treat hard surfaces
βœ… Apply autumn fertiliser
βœ… Keep mowing
βœ… Reduce lawn wear
βœ… Treat w**ds and moss

Many people stop thinking about their lawn once summer ends, but what you do over the next few months can make a big difference to how it looks come spring.

Autumn is a great time to repair thin or damaged areas, tackle w**ds and moss, strengthen your lawn ahead of winter and keep hard surfaces clear of unwanted growth. It's also worth continuing to mow as required and keeping on top of fallen leaves to prevent them from smothering the grass beneath.🍁

If you'd like a hand ticking anything off the checklist, we can help with lawn renovations, lawn w**d and moss treatments, hard surface w**d treatments, hard surface w**d and moss treatments and autumn fertiliser.

We have also opened our books for new customers looking to get their lawn in shape this autumn.

Weekly HQ Renovation Update 🌱

Four weeks on from renovation and the transformation continues! 🌱

The top photo shows the lawn at Week 3, while the bottom photo shows where we are now at Week 4. Over the past seven days, the lawn has continued to mature, with the new grass establishing strongly and blending in with the existing turf. The overall colour has deepened, the lawn appears denser, and the surface is looking much more uniform than it did just a week ago. πŸ‘€

One of the biggest changes this week is how much the renovation is beginning to knit together. Areas that looked thinner in previous updates are continuing to fill out, creating a fuller and healthier appearance across the lawn. πŸ’š

Swipe to the second slide for an update on the patch we've been tracking throughout the renovation. πŸ‘€ This area started out completely bare and, considering where it began, has recovered incredibly well. There is now plenty of new grass establishing across the patch, and it continues to fill in as the seedlings mature. While it's not fully there yet, the progress so far has been fantastic and shows what can be achieved with a little patience. 🌱

The recent combination of mild temperatures, rainfall and regular mowing has provided excellent growing conditions. Each cut encourages the grass plants to produce additional shoots, helping the lawn thicken further and improve overall density. βœ‚οΈ

There are still a few lighter patches visible, particularly in areas affected by repeated dog urine damage. These spots are taking a little longer to recover and may benefit from some additional overseeding later this autumn. 🐾

Despite these small areas, the lawn is now looking significantly stronger than it did at the start of the renovation. The improvement in colour, coverage and overall appearance is becoming increasingly noticeable, and we're excited to see how it continues to develop over the coming weeks.

We'll continue sharing weekly updates as the renovation progresses, so keep an eye out for the next stage of the transformation! πŸŒ±πŸ’š

Slow Mo Saturday πŸŽ₯🌱

This is a clear-up following scarification during the autumn renovation at Lawns One HQ.

Scarification is one of the messiest stages of a renovation, removing built-up thatch, moss and dead organic material from the lawn. While it can leave the lawn looking quite untidy initially, it's an important step in creating the ideal environment for fresh, healthy grass growth.

We've been making the most of the recent rainfall, which has provided excellent conditions for seed germination and recovery. 🌧️

It's not the most glamorous part of the renovation process, but it's one of the most important. The results will be worth it! πŸ’š

Have you ever been surprised by how much material comes out of a lawn during scarification? πŸ‘‡

🌧️ While we're pleased to see the rain return and fresh grass growth starting to take off, it's not just the grass benefiting from the improved conditions.

We're seeing plenty of new w**ds emerging, particularly in thinner and bare areas of lawns where there is less competition from the grass. However, w**ds are resilient plants and can establish themselves in even well-maintained lawns if the conditions are right.

A healthy, dense lawn is an important part of w**d management, but w**ds will still find their way into lawns. That's why an effective treatment plan should include both good lawn care practices and selective herbicide applications to help keep w**ds under control and prevent them from spreading further.

If w**ds are starting to take over your lawn, we can help. Get in touch with our team at [email protected] for advice on the best treatment options for your lawn. 🌱

Have you noticed more w**ds appearing in your lawn since the rain arrived? πŸ‘‡

Weekly HQ Renovation Update 🌱

Three weeks on from renovation and the transformation continues! 🌱

The top photo shows the lawn at Week 2, while the bottom photo shows where we are now at Week 3. Over the past seven days, the lawn has continued to thicken up, with the young grass plants establishing well and creating a much denser appearance across the lawn. The improvement in colour and coverage is becoming more noticeable with each update. πŸ‘€

Swipe to the second slide for a closer look at the progress. πŸ‘€ This area was completely bare at the start of the renovation process, but is now filling in nicely. The newer grass plants are beginning to blend in with the established grass, helping to create a more consistent finish throughout the lawn. 🌱

There are still a couple of areas that may require some additional attention, as they have been affected by urine burn from frequent dog use. These areas can be difficult to fully repair with a single renovation and will likely benefit from a further overseed or touch-up later this autumn. πŸ’š

The lawn has now also had its second cut, which will encourage the grass to produce additional shoots and thicken further, helping to improve density as the renovation continues. βœ‚οΈ

The recent weather has continued to provide excellent growing conditions, allowing the new grass to develop strong roots and put on plenty of growth. β˜”

While there are still a few thinner patches working their way through the renovation process, the lawn is now looking significantly fuller than it did just a few weeks ago. Patience is still important at this stage, but the results are certainly heading in the right direction. 😊

We'll continue sharing weekly updates as the lawn develops, so keep an eye out to see how the transformation progresses over the coming weeks. πŸŒ±πŸ’š

🌱 What you see above the surface often reflects what's happening below it. 🌱

This lawn is showing clear signs of soil compaction. Notice the lighter, yellowing areas and the lack of growth compared to the darker green sections. Compacted lawns often struggle to produce strong, vigorous growth, resulting in grass that stays shorter, thinner and less healthy-looking.

In this lawn, you can see variations in colour across the surface, which indicate differences in soil conditions below, in this case compaction.

Over time, foot traffic, pets, machinery and even periods of heavy rainfall can compress the soil, reducing the air spaces that grass roots rely on. When roots can't move freely through the soil profile, they find it harder to access oxygen, water and nutrients.

πŸ”Ž One simple way to check for compaction is the knife test. Try pushing a knife or screwdriver into moist soil (preferably after rainfall). In healthy soil, it should pe*****te the ground relatively easily. If it takes a lot of force, the soil is compacted beneath the surface.

Standard aeration can help relieve compaction in the top 3-4 inches of soil, improving airflow, drainage and root development. However, where deeper compaction is present, soil injection using the AirPro can provide a more comprehensive solution, breaking up compacted layers further down the soil profile and creating healthier growing conditions for the long term. πŸ’¨πŸŒ±

🌿 Healthy grass starts with healthy soil. If the soil isn't right, the lawn will often tell you.

If you're unsure what your lawn is trying to tell you, feel free to email us at πŸ“§ [email protected]

πŸ” What does successful germination look like?

When checking for successful seeding, don't expect thick, lush grass straight away. New grass plants begin life as single, fine blades, just like those highlighted in the magnified section of this photo.

To the untrained eye, it can sometimes look as though the seed hasn't taken because the new shoots are thin and sparse and don't yet resemble mature grass. However, these young blades are exactly what we want to see and are a great sign that germination is underway. 🌱

Over the coming weeks, these individual plants will develop, producing more blades and gradually becoming thicker and denser. Combined with regular mowing and the right growing conditions, they will begin to blend into the existing lawn and help create a fuller, healthier sward.

Patience is key. Today's fine green shoots are tomorrow's fuller, greener lawn. πŸ’š

Weekly HQ Renovation Update 🌱

Two weeks on from renovation and we're still really pleased with the progress!

The top photo shows the lawn at Week 1, while the bottom photo shows where we are now at Week 2. Over the past seven days, the lawn has continued to thicken up, with new grass plants helping to fill in many of the thinner areas. The improvement in colour and density is becoming more noticeable each week.

Swipe to the second slide to take a closer look at the germination progress. πŸ‘€Compared to last week's photo, even more seedlings are emerging and establishing across the lawn. Areas that were previously quite bare are now showing plenty of new growth, which is exactly what we want to see at this stage of the renovation process. 🌱

The recent rainfall has continued to provide excellent growing conditions, and with more rain forecast this week, we're excited to see even more progress. β˜”

While there is still work for the young grass plants to do, the renovation is moving in the right direction and the lawn is becoming thicker and fuller week by week. Patience is key, but the results so far are incredibly encouraging.

The first cut isn't far away now! πŸ˜ƒ

We'll keep sharing weekly updates as the renovation progresses, so keep an eye out to see how the transformation continues. 🌱

πŸ‚ Leatherjacket season is fast approaching! πŸ‚

Leatherjackets are one of the most difficult lawn pests to control. These grubs feed on the roots of the grass plant, weakening its anchor in the soil and leaving the turf vulnerable to damage.

The problem often becomes much more noticeable when birds, foxes and even badgers start searching for the grubs, pulling up patches of grass as they feast on the leatherjackets beneath the surface.

Leatherjackets have a four-stage life cycle, and treatment timing is crucial. The ideal time to target them is during the second instar stage, which typically falls in early to mid-October. At this stage, the grubs are much more susceptible to treatment, giving the best chance of achieving effective control.

βœ… Our insecticide can only be applied once per year, so getting the timing right is essential. While a single application may be effective, leatherjacket problems can sometimes require treatment over up to three consecutive years. This is because adult crane flies can continue to return and lay new eggs, leading to fresh infestations.

Where significant damage has occurred, a spring renovation is often recommended to help fill in any areas thinned or damaged by leatherjackets and the animals feeding on them, helping to restore a thicker, healthier lawn.

🌱 If you've noticed thinning grass, patches lifting easily from the soil, or increased bird activity on your lawn, leatherjackets could be the cause. If you're concerned your lawn may be affected, contact us at [email protected] and we'll be happy to help.
