Why plasterboard and modern plaster isn’t always right!

When a leak is fixed, the plaster repairs still need to be done properly. 👷‍♂️

Another water damage repair completed today, and a happy customer! ✅

This job started with a leak beneath the floor that unfortunately went undiagnosed, leaving the wall affected by damp and salts coming through the plaster.

Previous attempts to repair the damage using modern gypsum plaster had failed, leaving the customer needing a more suitable, long-term repair.

After having an independent survey carried out, the customer got the leak repaired. The next challenge was finding a plasterer who could carry out the repairs to the surveyor’s specification.

That’s where I came in. 👍

The customer found me through Facebook and Google, sent over the surveyor’s specification, and I arranged a site visit to assess the job. Once everything had been checked, we agreed on a price and date.

The repair was then carried out using the specified sand and cement system, following the surveyor’s requirements.

The job was completed today, to the agreed specification, and the customer is happy with the result. 👌

It’s worth remembering that not every plaster repair is a straightforward case of applying a bit of plaster and skimming over it.

Where there’s a history of leaks, damp and salt contamination, understanding the cause of the problem and following the correct repair specification is essential.

Getting the right repair system in place matters.

A little bit of good news to share 😊

I’ve just found out that Scott Beaumont Plastering has been named a Nextdoor Fave Awards 2026 winner! 🏆

It’s always nice to get recognition, but when it comes from people in your local community, it means that little bit more.

A big thank you to everyone who voted, recommended me or passed my number on over the years. Being a local tradesman, word of mouth means a lot, and I never take it for granted.

I’ve been plastering for 20 years now, and I’m still grateful every time someone trusts me with their home.

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail!

One of the most important parts of plastering is getting the preparation right before you even think about putting plaster on the wall.

Plaster needs the right conditions to bond and set properly, and two things we need to understand are suction and key.

Suction is how quickly a background draws moisture out of the plaster. If it’s too high, the plaster can start drying out too quickly, making it harder to work with and potentially affecting the finish. That’s why we sometimes need to control the suction first.

Then there’s creating a key. Some backgrounds are too smooth for plaster to bond properly without extra preparation.

A devil float, for example, has nails or screws sticking through it to roughen up the surface. It’s a bit of an old-school tool, but it does the job! You can also use a scratcher to put lines into a suitable base coat to help the next coat bond.

Then we have bonding agents and primers.

Most people have probably heard of PVA, the white glue we used at school, and SBR, which is used in certain cement-based applications and as a bonding agent.

There are also pre-grit primers, which contain aggregate to give suitable smooth surfaces a bit of texture for the plaster to grip onto.

And if you’re dealing with dusty or powdery backgrounds, or old coatings such as distemper or limewash, you need to identify what’s there and make sure it’s properly dealt with before going any further. Sometimes a stabilising solution is needed, but it all depends on the condition of the surface.

Then there’s different primers for cork insulation including xm bond and consilidante that are breathable.

The point is, there’s a reason plasterers spend time preparing walls before they start plastering them.

It’s not just about making it look good when we leave. It’s about getting the background right in the first place.

How did you do it that quick?

Plaster has a setting time, regardless of whether you’re doing a small patch or a whole wall.

It goes through a process, and that process plays a big part in how long a job takes.

Over the years I’ve tried pretty much every potion, trick and additive going to speed things up or slow things down 😂

These days I use a pre-made additive that helps me control the setting time and get jobs completed quicker.

That means less time working in your home, while still getting the finish I’m looking for.

I wouldn’t recommend playing around with additives if you’re new to plastering — they can catch you out very quickly!

But if you’ve got some experience under your belt, they can be a really useful tool to have in your kit.

Just another one of those little things you pick up after years on the trowel. 👌

They say size matters but it’s cold!!!

🥶 Cold weather is on the way… and so are the usual winter problems.

As temperatures drop, many homes start to see the return of condensation and black mould

Not only that with higher energy prices we’re all looking at saving the heat we spend so much on to stay in our home.

This is where thin cork wall insulation can help.

I’m a certified installer of cork insulation, and one of the questions I get asked most is:

“But how can 3–5mm of insulation actually make a difference?”

It’s a fair question.

Unlike traditional insulation boards, which can take up valuable room space, cork insulation is applied as a thin continuous coating directly to the wall.

The idea isn’t to create a massive layer of insulation. Instead, the cork coating helps improve the thermal performance of the wall and raise the internal surface temperature.

That can make a noticeable difference to how the wall feels and how it behaves during colder weather.

🌿 Why cork?

✔️ Only around 3–5mm thick

✔️ Helps reduce the cold-wall effect

✔️ Can help reduce condensation risk when combined with appropriate ventilation

✔️ Helps create a warmer-feeling internal surface

✔️ Breathable material

✔️ Thermal and acoustic properties

✔️ Class B fire rated

✔️ Flexible and seamless when applied correctly

✔️ Can be used internally or externally

✔️ Minimal loss of room space compared with conventional insulation systems

✔️ A natural, renewable material

And because it’s so thin, you don’t necessarily have to rip an entire room apart and lose skirting boards, coving and valuable floor space just to improve a cold wall.

Winter is when cold-wall problems really start to show themselves.

If you have a wall that feels noticeably colder than the rest of the room, suffers from condensation or is prone to black spot mould, it may be worth investigating why that wall is so cold rather than simply cleaning the mould every year.
