Ivy Mining Bees

If you notice lots of small bees flying close to the ground, nesting in lawns, flowerbeds or soil banks, please don’t panic. They may be ivy mining bees (Colletes hederae).
Despite sometimes appearing in large numbers, these are solitary bees, not a dangerous colony. Each female creates her own small nesting tunnel, although many may nest close together where the soil conditions are suitable.
Ivy mining bees are:

✅ Gentle and non-aggressive
✅ Unlikely to sting, even around their nesting areas
✅ Harmless to people, pets and buildings
✅ Important pollinators, particularly of flowering ivy
✅ Seasonal visitors that disappear naturally

Pesticide treatment is unnecessary and should be avoided. The best course of action is simply to leave them alone and enjoy watching these valuable native pollinators.

🐝 Ham or jam? What are the wasps choosing?

Researchers at UCL want pest professionals to help them understand what wasps are eating this summer 🍴

The Picnic Wasp Survey is looking at whether foraging wasps choose protein-rich foods such as meat, or sugary foods such as jam, fruit and soft drinks – and whether those preferences change as the season progresses.

🕵️ Pest technicians spend a lot of time observing wasps in the real world, so your sightings could provide particularly useful evidence.

Next time a wasp takes an interest in someone’s lunch, take a closer look before you shoo it away.
