🤔 I think we will soon be needing a fridge expansion! There wasn’t a lot of room to move this afternoon.

At the 2026 NFU Conference, Defra Secretary of State Emma Reynolds set out the Government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural industry. Emma’s address provided welcome clarity on the direction of the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) from 2026 onwards, alongside major funding announcements for wider rural investment.

SFI 2026:

- In June the scheme will open to small farmers between 3 and 50 hectares and those without existing ELM agreements, with the full list of actions available being released later today (24th February 2026).

- The introduction of a £100,000 agreement value cap per year for any business.

- A reduction in the number of actions from 102 to 71, with the lower uptake and less beneficial actions removed.

- Rates for 3 arable actions will be reduced.

- The SFI management payment is also being removed.

- Assurance has been provided that there will be no more sudden unexpected SFI closures.

In addition, the address at the conference went on to announce:

- The opening of a £225 million ELM Capital Grant Scheme in July 2026, a 50% increase on available funding compared to the 2025 scheme.

- £120 million of productivity grants for 2026, with £50 million of this being available through the Farming Equipment Technology Fund (FETF) opening in March 2026. The remaining £70 million will be available through the Farm Innovation Programme.

- A £1 billion new National Biosecurity Centre located in Weybridge.

As we have seen from previous rounds of the SFI and grant schemes, preparation and early applications will be key.

Filer Williamson have been working closely with P J Yates of Ireton Home Farm Kedleston, Derbyshire preparing and submitting Planning Applications to upgrade their Dairy Infrastructure on the Holding.

We worked with the Client, Environment Agency, Local Authority, Natural England and the Natural Trust to design a bespoke scheme that involved the installation of a Robot Milking Machine, Slurry Robot and associated infrastructure.

The last piece of the puzzle was the Planning Application for the Slurry Lagoon; permission was Granted by the Local Authority earlier today.

Filer Williamson submitted Planning Applications to extend the existing Agricultural Buildings to house the Robot Miking Machine and provide additional storage space on the farm, as well as the Planning Application for the new Earth Bank Slurry Lagoon.

In the photo below, we can see a delighted Client Chris Yates, being present with the Grant of Planning (Decision Notice).

If Filer Williamson can help you achieve similar positive outcomes with your farm diversification projects or developments please call or email at any time.
